La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Intercollegiate Athletics Department has announced the addition of women's lacrosse to its list of varsity teams starting in the fall of 2019. Women's lacrosse will become the 21st varsity sport and the 12th for women at UW-La Crosse.
UW-La Crosse Director of Athletics Kim Blum has also announced the hiring of Cassandra Berger as the Eagles' head women's lacrosse coach. Women's lacrosse will start varsity competition in 2019-20 with games being played in spring. Home games will be played on the UW-La Crosse soccer field at Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex.
"Cassandra has great energy and a personality that will serve her well in starting a program," said Blum. "I've been very impressed with her initiative and work ethic."
Berger earned four letters in lacrosse at the University of Dubuque (Iowa), serving as team captain her senior season. She earned Dubuque's (Iowa) Coaches Award and was named to the Midwest Lacrosse Conference All-Academic Team. Berger earned her bachelor's degree with a triple major in accounting, human resource management and business administration from Dubuque (Iowa) in 2016 and is currently pursuing her master's degree in business administration.

Newbury College (D3 MA) Adds Men's Lacrosse

BROOKLINE, Mass. - Newbury College is pleased to announce that it will add men’s lacrosse to its athletics lineup in the New England Collegiate Conference, beginning with the spring 2019 season. The College recently approved adding the sport to its intercollegiate athletics program, which currently sponsors 16 intercollegiate sport programs; eight men’s teams and eight women’s teams.
According to CollegeCross.com, 27 institutions added a lacrosse program in 2017, including the addition of Newbury College’s women’s lacrosse team. Sixteen of the 27 started men’s lacrosse programs.
“Since we announced the addition of our women’s lacrosse program two years ago, we have experienced an increase in interest for men’s lacrosse on campus.” said Newbury College Director of Athletics Jonathan Harper. “I am pleased that Newbury continues to strengthen the Athletics program by adding a sport that is very popular in the Northeast, especially at the high school level.”

American Athletic Conference to Sponsor Women's Lacrosse, Big East Responds with Realignment

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – American Athletic Conference Commissioner Mike Aresco has announced the addition of women’s lacrosse as the Conference’s 22nd sport beginning in 2019. The six-team league will be comprised of current conference members University of Cincinnati, University of
Connecticut, East Carolina University and Temple University, as well as the University of Florida and Vanderbilt University as affiliate members.
The American becomes the 16th Division I conference to sponsor women’s lacrosse.
Cincinnati, UConn, Temple, Florida and Vanderbilt are current members of the Big East Conference in women’s lacrosse, while ECU begins its first season of intercollegiate competition in 2018 after the addition of women’s lacrosse to its sports roster in March 2016. Women’s lacrosse is the first sport addition to the conference since its reinvention in 2013. The American will now sponsor 10 men’s and 12 women’s sports. The conference will conduct its first women’s lacrosse championship in 2019 with the site and dates still to be determined. The American will receive an automatic bid into the NCAA Championship.

US Lacrosse Releases Annual Participation Survey

National lacrosse participation continued its upward trend in 2016 with the total number of participants on organized teams climbing past 825,000, according to an annual report produced by US Lacrosse. Overall, participation grew 3 percent to 826,023, and it was the 12th consecutive year that the net increase in players was at least 20,000.
The number of youth players topped 450,000 for the first time ever, and lacrosse continues to be the fastest-growing team sport at the high school and collegiate levels. Over the last five years, the number of schools sponsoring lacrosse at the high school level has risen 27 percent, and the number of NCAA schools sponsoring lacrosse has grown 33 percent.

MARIETTA, Ga. – Life University Director of Athletics Jayme Pendergast announced the addition of Women's Lacrosse to the Running Eagles athletics department on Tuesday. The program will begin its inaugural season in the spring of 2019.
"We are very excited to add Women's Lacrosse to our expanding athletic department," said Pendergast. "Lacrosse will bring a sport to LIFE's campus that is not only growing in the state of Georgia, but nationally. Lupo Family Field will serve as a beautiful facility for competition and I'm looking forward to adding such an exciting sport that is emerging in the NAIA."
The sport is rapidly growing with 32 schools currently competing in the NAIA. While Women's Lacrosse is currently an invitational sport, it will transition to a national championship sport once a minimum 40 schools sponsor Women's Lacrosse programs.

UPLAND, Ind. – Taylor University has announced plans to begin men's and women's varsity lacrosse programs, increasing the number of intercollegiate programs offered to student-athletes at TU to 20.
"We are excited about bringing men's and women's lacrosse from a club sport level to a varsity sport," stated Vice President for Student Development Skip Trudeau. "As clubs they have been a great addition to our campus and taking them to the varsity level is the next logical step."
The men's lacrosse program will continue as a club sport until it begins playing official varsity contests during the spring of 2019 and the women's lacrosse team will begin playing competitively the following season in 2020.

NEWARK, Del. - - The Wilmington University athletic department is proud to announce the addition of men's lacrosse to its expanding family starting competition in the spring of 2018.
The added sport will bring Wilmington's total up to 14 varsity programs.
Men's lacrosse has long been a staple in the Mid-Atlantic and is a continuing trend in Delaware. Being located along the I-95 corridor, Wilmington University will look to add to the East Coast bias and help the expansion of already rapidly growing sport.
"It's an exciting time for the athletic department with the addition of men's lacrosse," Director of Athletics Linda Van Drie-Andrzjewski said. "Not only does it mean growth within the department here at Wilmington, it means growth within the CACC and the sport of men's lacrosse in state of Delaware."

SALEM, Ore. – Willamette University Athletics Director Valerie Cleary has announced that the NCAA Division III Bearcats will hire a head coach for women's lacrosse in the spring of 2017 with the goal of competing within the Northwest Conference in the spring of 2019.

After careful consideration of levels of interest in high school sports, student interest surveys completed on campus last spring, and competition available within the Northwest Conference, lacrosse quickly emerged as the top candidate for Willamette's new women's sport," Cleary said.

Upper Iowa University and the Athletics Department is proud to announce that women's lacrosse will become the 16th varsity sport for the Peacocks with the first team set to compete in the 2018-19 academic year.
A search for a full-time head coach will begin immediately with the position starting early this spring (2017) to establish recruiting, schedules and other day-to-day operations for the new program. The program's first competition will take place in spring 2019.
The team will compete and train at Harms-Eischeid Stadium.
"We are excited to add women's lacrosse to our Athletics Department and provide new opportunities to new students looking at Upper Iowa University as their top choice for higher education," said President William R. Duffy II. "The caliber of student-athletes who compete in lacrosse will be an asset for our university, and we look forward to these young women becoming UIU leaders inside and outside of the classroom."

In his first year at the helm, Reed added men's wrestling to the docket, and after many months of research the decision was made to start a men's lacrosse program at CCC. Lacrosse is one of the fastest growing sports in the United States and has been gaining popularity here in the central states over the past decade. Currently it is listed as an invitational sport in the NAIA with 30 schools sponsoring a program.

Lacrosse at the high school level has grown dramatically since 2001 and continues to expand at a more rapid rate than most other sports. Girls' lacrosse again cracked the top 10 in number of participants, with about 88,000 players at schools covered by the NFHS survey.
Data on school sponsorship and student participation are compiled annually by the National Federation of State High School Associations, and we have created a summary of the NFHS data, which includes both data tables and graphs that present the figures longitudinally.
From 2001 through 2016, the number of high schools sponsoring boys' and girls' lacrosse increased by 193% and 229%, respectively. Over that period, the number of students participating in lacrosse rose by 162% for boys and 172% for girls. For more detailed information, see the full report
Note that the NFHS universe is limited. There are over 1,200 boys' and about 700 girls' lacrosse teams and their participants not included in the totals. In many states, the NFHS umbrella does not include all schools. High schools in states where lacrosse is not officially sanctioned are simply not reflected in NFHS figures.
