Lacrosse at the high school level has grown dramatically since 2001 and continues to expand at a more rapid rate than most other sports. Girls' lacrosse again cracked the top 10 in number of participants, with about 88,000 players at schools covered by the NFHS survey.
Data on school sponsorship and student participation are compiled annually by the National Federation of State High School Associations, and we have created a summary of the NFHS data, which includes both data tables and graphs that present the figures longitudinally.
From 2001 through 2016, the number of high schools sponsoring boys' and girls' lacrosse increased by 193% and 229%, respectively. Over that period, the number of students participating in lacrosse rose by 162% for boys and 172% for girls. For more detailed information, see the full report
Note that the NFHS universe is limited. There are over 1,200 boys' and about 700 girls' lacrosse teams and their participants not included in the totals. In many states, the NFHS umbrella does not include all schools. High schools in states where lacrosse is not officially sanctioned are simply not reflected in NFHS figures.

CCIW to Sponsor Men's and Women's Lacrosse

NAPERVILLE, Ill. – The College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) announced today the addition of men's and women's lacrosse beginning with the 2014-15 academic year.
The CCIW Council of Presidents voted to approve the addition of both sports, bringing the conference's total number of sports sponsored to 23.
This announcement marks the first time since 2001 when the conference added men's and women's indoor track & field that the CCIW has added to its sport sponsorship list. Before that, the conference added women's golf in 1996.
"The CCIW is excited about adding men's and women's lacrosse as we will be capitalizing on the recent growth of lacrosse around the country," CCIW commissioner Chris Martin said. "This is a significant step and we look forward to crowning conference champions in both sports following the 2015 season."

Intramural Lacrosse

Intramurals in general are for the casual and non-committal sports participant. However, current models for intramural lacrosse require participants to provide their own sticks, therefore catering to individuals who are already hooked on the sport or at least have some previous experience. IM Lacrosse should be an opportunity to expose the sport to new participants, but to do this Intramural Departments would need to purchase their own sticks for use by their students.
Another problem is that there is no nationally agreed upon playing rules for intramural lacrosse. NIRSA has set national intramural rules for many sports offered by Universities, lacrosse not being one of them. Since intramural lacrosse currently has no agreed upon rules, schools are left on their own to set guidelines, giving students inconsistent experiences from school to school.
Unless the demand is there, which it likely isn't at this time given the amount of varsity and club options out there, Intramural Departments will likely continue leaving IM Lacrosse as a niche phenomenon with student supplied equipment. However, twenty years from now your dorm may have an organized lacrosse team rather than football team.
