URBANA, Ohio – The Urbana University Department of Athletics announced it will add two sports with the revival of women's lacrosse and the addition of women's water polo. Both sports will begin competition in 2020-21.
Urbana Blue Knights Athletics will expand to 23 combined NCAA Division II varsity and club sports, which also includes the additions of acrobatics & tumbling, men's wrestling and men's volleyball in the past two years. UU will now feature 12 total women's varsity and club programs.
The Blue Knights will compete among six women's lacrosse teams in the Mountain East Conference, where it finished sixth in 2015 and fifth in 2016. UU discontinued women's lacrosse in 2016 after going 10-73 in six seasons of NCAA DII competition.
"I am excited to bring women's lacrosse back to Urbana University," Executive Vice President/CEO Dr. Christopher Washington said. "My enthusiasm is fueled by UU alumni who played lacrosse and went on to become intercollegiate coaches at other universities. I expect that women's lacrosse will attract scholar-athletes, promote healthy lifestyles, foster growth in leadership and teamwork skills, and encourage the pursuit of excellence that challenges them to reach their full potential."

Youngstown State (D1 OH) and Wilson College (D3 PA) Add Women's Lacrosse

Youngstown State will add a men's swimming and diving program as well as a women's lacrosse team in the near future, Executive Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Ron Strollo announced on Monday.
Men's swimming and diving will become the 20th Division I sport currently offered by the YSU Athletic Department when it begins competition this fall. YSU previously competed in men's swimming and diving from 1964 through 1984 and 1949-51. Women's lacrosse is scheduled to debut in the spring of 2021.
"We're excited about this new opportunity to recruit high school students from Ohio, the region and internationally to pursue their academic and athletic goals at Youngstown State in both sports," Strollo said. "Our swimming facility is one of the best in the area and we look forward to showcasing it with both our men's and women's programs. The growth of women's lacrosse in Ohio and throughout the Midwest has seen an increased number of schools sponsor the sport and we are thrilled to add it at Youngstown State."

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. ─ Wilson College continues to expand its intercollegiate athletics program with the addition of women's lacrosse─the fastest-growing NCAA women's sport of the past 15 years.
Women's lacrosse will become Wilson's 11th NCAA Division III program. In the last six years, the college has added six intercollegiate programs─most recently baseball, which will begin its inaugural season this spring with a home opener at Chambersburg's historic Henninger Field.
"Our sport sponsorship continues to expand and we are excited to add the growing sport of women's lacrosse to Phoenix Athletics," said Wilson Director of Athletics Lori Frey. "We look forward to yet another sport competing in the Colonial States Athletics Conference." Wilson's first lacrosse season will occur in the spring of 2021.

La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Intercollegiate Athletics Department has announced the addition of women's lacrosse to its list of varsity teams starting in the fall of 2019. Women's lacrosse will become the 21st varsity sport and the 12th for women at UW-La Crosse.
UW-La Crosse Director of Athletics Kim Blum has also announced the hiring of Cassandra Berger as the Eagles' head women's lacrosse coach. Women's lacrosse will start varsity competition in 2019-20 with games being played in spring. Home games will be played on the UW-La Crosse soccer field at Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex.
"Cassandra has great energy and a personality that will serve her well in starting a program," said Blum. "I've been very impressed with her initiative and work ethic."
Berger earned four letters in lacrosse at the University of Dubuque (Iowa), serving as team captain her senior season. She earned Dubuque's (Iowa) Coaches Award and was named to the Midwest Lacrosse Conference All-Academic Team. Berger earned her bachelor's degree with a triple major in accounting, human resource management and business administration from Dubuque (Iowa) in 2016 and is currently pursuing her master's degree in business administration.

Quincy University (D2 IL) Adds Men's and Women's Lacrosse

QUINCY, Ill. – Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Marty Bell has announced the addition of two varsity sports to the Quincy University Athletic Department. Men's and women's lacrosse will begin varsity competition during the 2019-2020 school year. Lacrosse will be Quincy University's 18th and 19th varsity sports that participate in NCAA competition.
The NCAA currently has 67 men's lacrosse teams and 107 women's lacrosse teams that currently compete in the NCAA Division II competition. The men's lacrosse team will participate in the Great Lakes Valley Conference which currently has six teams competing in the conference. The women's lacrosse team will also compete in the GLVC which will begin its women's lacrosse portion of the conference in the near future.

Newbury College (D3 MA) Adds Men's Lacrosse

BROOKLINE, Mass. - Newbury College is pleased to announce that it will add men’s lacrosse to its athletics lineup in the New England Collegiate Conference, beginning with the spring 2019 season. The College recently approved adding the sport to its intercollegiate athletics program, which currently sponsors 16 intercollegiate sport programs; eight men’s teams and eight women’s teams.
According to CollegeCross.com, 27 institutions added a lacrosse program in 2017, including the addition of Newbury College’s women’s lacrosse team. Sixteen of the 27 started men’s lacrosse programs.
“Since we announced the addition of our women’s lacrosse program two years ago, we have experienced an increase in interest for men’s lacrosse on campus.” said Newbury College Director of Athletics Jonathan Harper. “I am pleased that Newbury continues to strengthen the Athletics program by adding a sport that is very popular in the Northeast, especially at the high school level.”

Allegheny College (D3 PA) Adds Men's Lacrosse

MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Allegheny College Board of Trustees has authorized the addition of field hockey and men's lacrosse to the school's varsity athletic offerings.
"We are very excited to add field hockey and men's lacrosse to Allegheny's athletic program," stated Allegheny College President Dr. James H. Mullen, Jr. "These two sports will afford opportunities for excellent student-athletes from across the country to be part of a nationally-recognized academic community, and contribute to a proud athletic tradition that extends back to the founding of the NCAA."
Field hockey will begin play in the fall of 2019, while the inaugural season of Gator men's lacrosse will be spring of 2020. The search for a head coach for each program will begin immediately.
"Men's lacrosse and field hockey have been on our radar for several years," said Portia Hoeg, Allegheny Director of Athletics and Recreation. "However, we did not have the proper resources in place to create a solid foundation for additional sports."

Upper Iowa University and the Athletics Department is proud to announce that women's lacrosse will become the 16th varsity sport for the Peacocks with the first team set to compete in the 2018-19 academic year.
A search for a full-time head coach will begin immediately with the position starting early this spring (2017) to establish recruiting, schedules and other day-to-day operations for the new program. The program's first competition will take place in spring 2019.
The team will compete and train at Harms-Eischeid Stadium.
"We are excited to add women's lacrosse to our Athletics Department and provide new opportunities to new students looking at Upper Iowa University as their top choice for higher education," said President William R. Duffy II. "The caliber of student-athletes who compete in lacrosse will be an asset for our university, and we look forward to these young women becoming UIU leaders inside and outside of the classroom."

In his first year at the helm, Reed added men's wrestling to the docket, and after many months of research the decision was made to start a men's lacrosse program at CCC. Lacrosse is one of the fastest growing sports in the United States and has been gaining popularity here in the central states over the past decade. Currently it is listed as an invitational sport in the NAIA with 30 schools sponsoring a program.

Lacrosse at the high school level has grown dramatically since 2001 and continues to expand at a more rapid rate than most other sports. Girls' lacrosse again cracked the top 10 in number of participants, with about 88,000 players at schools covered by the NFHS survey.
Data on school sponsorship and student participation are compiled annually by the National Federation of State High School Associations, and we have created a summary of the NFHS data, which includes both data tables and graphs that present the figures longitudinally.
From 2001 through 2016, the number of high schools sponsoring boys' and girls' lacrosse increased by 193% and 229%, respectively. Over that period, the number of students participating in lacrosse rose by 162% for boys and 172% for girls. For more detailed information, see the full report
Note that the NFHS universe is limited. There are over 1,200 boys' and about 700 girls' lacrosse teams and their participants not included in the totals. In many states, the NFHS umbrella does not include all schools. High schools in states where lacrosse is not officially sanctioned are simply not reflected in NFHS figures.

MARS HILL, N.C. – Athletic Director David Riggins and the Mars Hill University Athletics Department announce the addition of women's lacrosse for the 2017-18 season. Also announced is inaugural head coach, Kristina Llanes. Llanes will spend the 2016-17 season on the recruiting trail before placing MHU's first women's lacrosse team on the field in the spring of 2018.
Riggins stated, "Mars Hill University welcomes Coach Llanes to the Lion Athletic Family. We are so fortunate to land a head coach with such extensive head coaching experience. The fact that she has experience in developing a first year collegiate program is value added."

PITTSBURGH, Pa - The Chatham University Athletic Department would like to officially announce that they will be expanding in the 2016-2017 Academic Year by adding both Women's and Men's Lacrosse.
A search for new head coaches will begin immediately, and Chatham will play in the single-sport Ohio River Lacrosse Conferences (ORLC & ORWLC). These were formed in the fall of 2014 when the President's Athletic Conference (PAC) and the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) aligned to create these conferences for men's and women's lacrosse.
Current PAC members Saint Vincent College, Thiel College, Washington & Jefferson College, and Westminster College sponsor men's and women's varsity lacrosse programs, with Bethany College sponsoring a men's program and Waynesburg University and Thomas More College a women's program. In addition, five HCAC member schools will compete in the ORLWC, while four HCAC member schools will compete in the ORLC.
"The addition of women's and men's lacrosse is an example of Chatham's ongoing commitment to the expansion and support of our athletic program," states Athletic Director Leonard Trevino. "We are excited to begin the process of building lacrosse programs that will compete at the highest levels, while continuing our traditions of academic excellence."

LIVONIA, Mich. – Madonna University President Michael Grandillo announced today (August 12) that the University will be expanding its intercollegiate athletics program by eight sports, bringing the Crusaders' roster to 19 teams.
Madonna will add:
• men's and women's bowling
• men's and women's lacrosse
• men's and women's indoor track and field
• men's and women's outdoor track and field
According to President Grandillo the addition of these sports will increase enrollment, while enhancing the sense of community on campus. "I look forward to working with our fine athletics staff and coaches to build upon their winning ways, as we provide greater opportunities for students to compete in the sports they love, while they pursue their academic goals," said Grandillo. "Participation in athletics and student organizations enriches the college experience, which is why we are proud to offer Madonna students more choices for learning outside the classroom."
Madonna University competes in the 12-school Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). The addition of these eight sports marks the first new teams added at Madonna since 2005, when men's and women's cross country brought the total to 11 teams.
