Birmingham, AL—The increasing popularity of women's lacrosse has expanded into the Gulf South Conference, as the league officially announced that it will be adding the sport to its sponsorship list for 2015-16.
The GSC Presidents agreed to move forward with the addition of women's lacrosse at its annual business meeting this past June and the addition was made official when the University of Montevallo and Young Harris College signed on as affiliate members last week.
"Women's lacrosse has consistently been one of the fastest growing sports in the NCAA for a number of years and we are excited to provide championship and award opportunities for these student-athletes in the Gulf South Conference," GSC Commissioner Matt Wilson said. "Our Board of Directors believes this is a sport that makes sense for the GSC and I anticipate seeing more regional Division II programs in the next four or five years."

Cleveland State Wrestling Team Restored; Lacrosse Will Be Added

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Cleveland State saved its wrestling team Wednesday. The university announced it will keep and fund wrestling while also adding men's lacrosse in 2016.
The school plans to raise student fees $1 per credit hour to assure wrestling's future.
"We're excited," CSU chief marketing officer Rob Spademan said. "The key thing is we as an administration listened to the students, and we figured out a way to do it without a major (fee) increase to the students.''

Westminster College (DIII PA) Adds Lacrosse

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - Westminster College has announced the addition of men's lacrosse as a varsity sport for the 2015-16 academic year. The addition of men's lacrosse increases the number of Westminster's varsity sports to 21. Men's lacrosse will be a spring sport.
"The addition of lacrosse to our portfolio of athletic offerings reflects the growth of the sport nationally and increasing interest in it by both current and prospective students," Westminster President Richard Dorman said. "As the Presidents Athletic Conference (PAC) continues to see new varsity lacrosse programs established at member colleges, Westminster is pleased to be the next entry into this fast and exciting sport."
Westminster is anticipating adding women's lacrosse as a varsity sport in the near future. At this time, women's lacrosse remains a club sport.

Wartburg College (DIII Iowa) To Add Women's Lacrosse

WAVERLY, Iowa—Wartburg College will add women’s lacrosse as a varsity sport with plans to begin competition in the spring of 2015.
This marks the first new program since men and women’s soccer was added in 1989, bringing Wartburg’s total to 20 varsity teams- 10 each for women and men.
NCAA Division III has 215 women’s lacrosse varsity programs.
“Lacrosse is the fastest growing sport in the Midwest,” said Rick Willis, Wartburg College athletic director. “Offering lacrosse allows us to provide additional participation opportunities while also giving additional high school students another reason to consider attending Wartburg.”
Several other schools in the Central region have recently added lacrosse programs, including the University of Dubuque and Loras College in the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The program will compete as an independent program as lacrosse is not an IIAC- sponsored sport. Wartburg will begin the hiring process of a full-time coach this spring.

Muskingum University (DIII OH) Adds Lacrosse

Muskingum University is proud to announce that men’s and women’s lacrosse will be added as a varsity sport beginning in the 2014-15 academic year. Muskingum joins seven other Ohio Athletic Conference schools in adding lacrosse, which has been the fastest-growing team sport in America over the past decade.
“It’s always exciting to offer additional athletic opportunities to our student-athletes,” said Muskingum Athletic Director Larry Shank. “Adding lacrosse will enhance Muskingum and showcase our university to a greater number of high school students.”
The addition of men’s and women’s lacrosse will elevate Muskingum’s athletic department to 21 varsity sports.
