Oskaloosa--William Penn Athletics Director Nik Rule is excited to announce the addition of men's and women's lacrosse and men's volleyball to the list of intercollegiate sports the University offers.
All three sports will begin competition in the 2019-2020 school year. They are the first sports to be added since men's and women's bowling back in 2009-2010; WPU has added or reinstated seven programs since joining the NAIA in 2001-2002.
"We feel these three intercollegiate sports fit perfectly into our strategic plan for our University and the athletics department," Rule said. "They are quickly-emerging sports in the NAIA with several schools in our conference and our region sponsoring them. It is the perfect time to add them to our department and we have facilities that will immediately be able to accommodate each sport."

SPOKANE, Wash. – Women’s lacrosse will become Whitworth University’s 21st varsity sport and will begin playing games in the spring of 2019.
Whitworth will become the seventh Northwest Conference school to sponsor women’s lacrosse. George Fox, Linfield, Pacific (Ore.), Puget Sound and Whitman already sponsor women’s lacrosse as a varsity sport. Willamette will also begin playing varsity games in the spring of 2019.
“We are excited to provide another opportunity for our students to compete in a Northwest Conference sport that, up until this point, we did not offer,” said Tim Demant, Whitworth’s Director of Athletics. “We will now provide an opportunity for those students who desire to play women’s lacrosse at the collegiate level an opportunity to also get a Whitworth education.”

Lacrosse at the high school level has grown dramatically since 2001 and continues to expand at a more rapid rate than most other sports. Girls' lacrosse again cracked the top 10 in number of participants, with about 88,000 players at schools covered by the NFHS survey.
Data on school sponsorship and student participation are compiled annually by the National Federation of State High School Associations, and we have created a summary of the NFHS data, which includes both data tables and graphs that present the figures longitudinally.
From 2001 through 2016, the number of high schools sponsoring boys' and girls' lacrosse increased by 193% and 229%, respectively. Over that period, the number of students participating in lacrosse rose by 162% for boys and 172% for girls. For more detailed information, see the full report
Note that the NFHS universe is limited. There are over 1,200 boys' and about 700 girls' lacrosse teams and their participants not included in the totals. In many states, the NFHS umbrella does not include all schools. High schools in states where lacrosse is not officially sanctioned are simply not reflected in NFHS figures.

Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (DII) To Sponsor Lacrosse

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. --- Men's lacrosse is being added as an official Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference sport starting in the 2015-16 school year.
Participating members will be Adams State University, Colorado Mesa University, CSU-Pueblo and Westminster College. Rockhurst University (Kansas City, Mo.) will also participate as an associate member.
"Lacrosse has been the fastest growing sp
ort in the NCAA and we are pleased to support the program for our male student-athletes while enhancing the development of the sport within the Rocky Mountain region," said RMAC Commissioner Chris Graham. "It is always rewarding when the membership can expand competitive opportunities."
With the addition of men's lacrosse, the RMAC now sponsors 23 sports, the most in the 105-year history of the conference. This is the first men's sport added to the RMAC since men's swimming and diving in 2008. Women's lacrosse became an official RMAC sport in 2013.

It’s official: helmets have been mandated in the state of Florida.
On June 10, the Florida High School Athletic Association ruled that all participating members of the FHSAA will have to wear helmets in 2015. These participating FHSAA programs will be the only teams in the nation state-mandated to wear this form of protective head gear.
“The board did vote on mandating a helmet for the 2015 season,” Alex Ozuna, an Assistant Director of Athletics and the lacrosse administrator for the Florida High School Athletic Association, confirmed Wednesday. “A board member brought up this recommendation to the board for an action item. It was discussed during the operations committee, and we had individuals from US Lacrosse present to kind of give the committee a background on where they currently are in the process of standardizing specifications for a soft helmet for the girl’s game.”
Ozuna continued: “The item was taken to the Board of Directors. The whole entire board reviewed and took into account what was said by the individuals from US Lacrosse and decided that because it is a major safety issue in our state — they took into account how long the process has been for US Lacrosse to get to this point — and moving forward that they wanted to go ahead and take the steps now instead of having to wait one, two, possibly three years for an actual product with the specific standardize specifications that US Lacrosse was going to implement.”

The University of Saint Mary has hired its first ever lacrosse coach as it builds toward the launch of men's and women's club-level lacrosse teams that will take the field in the Spring 2015 semester.
Lacrosse Coach Matt Kimsey comes to the University of Saint Mary Spires from the Blue Valley West Jaguars lacrosse program, which he coached for the past three years.
He will shepherd the development of Saint Mary Men's & Women's Lacrosse—first as a club-level program for Spring 2015, and then as a varsity program the following year.
Kimsey already has several recruits committed to playing lacrosse at Saint Mary, and USM athletics is offering scholarships to student-athletes to come play lacrosse for the Spires.
"For me, the excitement is about building a new program here," Kimsey said.
"The University of Saint Mary has a real community feel, a real family feel. Building a lacrosse program around that is a natural fit.

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- Moravian College will elevate its men's and women's lacrosse teams from club to varsity status beginning with the 2016 season. Since 2011, both the men's and women's teams have competed in the National College Lacrosse League for club teams. Previously, Moravian's women's team completed at the NCAA Division III intercollegiate varsity level from 2003 to 2010. The men's team squad competed on the varsity level from 2004 through 2010.
"Restoring men's and women's lacrosse to varsity level competition in 2015-16 is another step in Moravian College's growth and revitalization," said Dr. Bryon L. Grigsby '90, president. "There is a growing interest in playing lacrosse among college bound students in the mid-Atlantic region. We intend to attract those student-athletes with a transformative quality education and an outstanding intercollegiate sports experience."

Formation of The California Junior College Lacrosse Association Announced

Santa Rosa, California – April 10, 2013 – The growth of lacrosse continues to boom throughout the state of California and junior colleges are no exception. Set to begin in the fall of 2013, California junior college men’s lacrosse clubs are invited to compete under one umbrella within the California Junior College Lacrosse Association (CJCLA).
The CJCLA is dedicated to expanding junior college lacrosse opportunities for the student-athletes of California. Membership in the CJCLA is open to any California junior college lacrosse program that is officially recognized as a student club by their institution. The mission of the CJCLA is to provide new program assistance, student-athlete eligibility requirements, administering of individual awards and accolades for players, and hosting of the CJCLA Championship Tournament at the conclusion of the regular season.

The Gophers are getting closer to unveiling their vision for a major overhaul to their facilities for football, basketball and other sports.
Athletics director Norwood Teague said Thursday that the department's strategic facilities plan should be completed by mid-April. After that, department officials will begin a statewide tour to drum up fundraising. The eventual cost, Teague said, could be anywhere from $80 million to $125 million, but with some of the most outmoded facilities in the Big Ten, the university is trying to close the gap.
On potentially adding or cutting from the list of 25 Gophers sports teams: "There could be a time that could change, but I think it would be more of an addition than subtraction. ... [Adding lacrosse] is mentioned all the time. We'll look at it, but it doesn't mean it will happen any time soon."

MINNEAPOLIS -- Augsburg College is continuing its tradition of being a pioneer in women's athletics by creating a varsity women's lacrosse team, to begin play in the 2013-14 school year.
Augsburg will be the first college or university in Minnesota to sponsor a varsity women's lacrosse program. Augsburg continues to lead the field in adding athletic opportunities for women; in 1995, Augsburg was the first college or university in the Midwest to sponsor a varsity women's ice hockey team.
“I am proud that Augsburg is once again willing to be the leader in bringing a varsity women's program to Minnesota,” said Augsburg Athletic Director Jeff Swenson. “As we were pioneers in 1995 when we were the first Midwestern school to have a varsity women's hockey program, we continue to be committed to be a strong leader for women's athletics.”

Duke University men’s lacrosse coach John Danowski still talks to recruits’ parents about the stripper party that led to false rape allegations six years ago.
University of Virginia coach Dom Starsia won’t grant interview requests about a former player who beat his girlfriend to death two years ago. Johns Hopkins coach Dave Pietramala says a survey that showed lacrosse players are the biggest users of illicit drugs among college athletes was “deeply concerning.”

The rules of lacrosse allow for both player-to-player and stick-to-player contact, leaving players susceptible to acute traumatic injuries like those commonly seen in football and ice hockey.
However, as lacrosse continues to become a year-round game, chronic repetitive injuries like those typical in baseball, tennis and swimming may begin to surface.
Lacrosse has grown rapidly in the past 10 years. According to a recent survey by US Lacrosse, the sport's national governing body, participation has risen by an average of 10 percent a year since 2002, with more than 600,000 people now playing at various levels. Despite the physical nature of the sport, lacrosse maintains an injury rate substantially lower than those in football, wrestling, ice hockey, men's and women's soccer and gymnastics. However, as the game continues to expand, more players and more games mean more injuries.

SOUTH BEND — Welcome to the western frontier of the men's college lacrosse civilization.
A wilderness, of sorts.
Notre Dame is one of the remote outposts in the sport's wild west. Only Air Force and Denver are more distant from the center of the universe.
Lacrosse is as East Coast as that thin, foldable New York-style pizza and crab cakes. It comes with an attitude and a bias against anything that doesn't conform.
All that causes Kevin Corrigan little angst. The Irish lacrosse coach for the last 23 years, Corrigan has made a career out of riding in the face of the bias.
Focus. Do the work, day-to-day. Believe in the system.
The system has worked pretty well lately. Two years ago, an undefeated regular season and No. 2 national ranking were spoiled by a first-round elimination in the NCAA Tournament. Last year, struggles through the regular season were followed by a magical run through the tournament that ended in an overtime loss to Duke in the national championship game.
