University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire (D3) Adds Women's Lacrosse

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (blugolds.com) - The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire has announced the launch of a plan for investing in its future to ensure student success and bring talent to the region for years to come.

"We are in the midst of an exciting time for UW-Eau Claire," Chancellor James Schmidt said. "We are making strides toward improving success outcomes for our students. We're launching new in-demand academic programs and moving forward in important initiatives like our research collaboration with Mayo Clinic Health System and our public-private partnership for the new Sonnentag Event and Recreation Complex — all developments that will bring significant new opportunities for our students while serving the needs of the Chippewa Valley and our state. That's what this new investment plan is all about."

The expansion of UW-Eau Claire's athletics teams will include the reinstatement of men's baseball (which was discontinued in 1995) and the addition of women's lacrosse in the spring 2021 season, as well as the addition of men's soccer in the fall 2021 season.

Webber International University (NAIA FL) Adds Lacrosse

BABSON PARK, Fla. (August 17, 2019) – Webber International University athletics and Director of Athletics Darren Richie have announced the addition of men's and women's lacrosse as the school's 22nd and 23rd intercollegiate sports, beginning varsity competition in the spring of 2021.

The decision to add lacrosse at Webber comes in conjunction with the new turf field located on campus, which will soon be home to the Warriors' football and men's and women's soccer teams as well as lacrosse. "We are pleased to announce the start of lacrosse for both men and women at Webber," spoke Webber's Director of Athletics Mr. Darren Richie.

"The addition of lacrosse gives us 23 sports and helps us get closer to our goal of reaching 700 student-athletes. We look forward to developing a very high-caliber and competitive NAIA team."

Upper Iowa University (DII) and Central Christian College (KS NAIA) Add Lacrosse

Upper Iowa University and the Athletics Department is proud to announce that women's lacrosse will become the 16th varsity sport for the Peacocks with the first team set to compete in the 2018-19 academic year. A search for a full-time head coach will begin immediately with the position starting early this spring (2017) to establish recruiting, schedules and other day-to-day operations for the new program. The program's first competition will take place in spring 2019.

The team will compete and train at Harms-Eischeid Stadium. "We are excited to add women's lacrosse to our Athletics Department and provide new opportunities to new students looking at Upper Iowa University as their top choice for higher education," said President William R. Duffy II. "The caliber of student-athletes who compete in lacrosse will be an asset for our university, and we look forward to these young women becoming UIU leaders inside and outside of the classroom."

The Central Christian College Board of Trustees and the President's Cabinet have approved the addition of Men's Lacrosse beginning in the Fall of 2017. The announcement was made late last week by Central Christian Director of Athletics, Steve "Twiggs" Reed. When Reed was hired in the summer of 2015, one of the projects he was tasked with by CCC President, Hal Hoxie, was to begin looking at other NAIA championship sports that could be added to the College's lineup of athletic programs, that would help place in CCC in the national spotlight, and also help to boost enrollment.

In his first year at the helm, Reed added men's wrestling to the docket, and after many months of research the decision was made to start a men's lacrosse program at CCC. Lacrosse is one of the fastest growing sports in the United States and has been gaining popularity here in the central states over the past decade. Currently it is listed as an invitational sport in the NAIA with 30 schools sponsoring a program.

Averett University (D3 VA) & Columbia College (NAIA MO) Add Lacrosse

DANVILLE, Va. — Through the support of an anonymous donor, Averett University is proud to announce the addition of three NCAA Division III varsity athletics programs — men's lacrosse, women's lacrosse and men's wrestling. All three are scheduled to begin play during the 2017-18 academic year. Averett is launching its 14th, 15th and 16th varsity programs, respectively, as part of the university's "Averett 2020" strategic plan to increase enrollment and expand the geographic diversity of its student population.

The three programs are expected to generate 90 new students within four years, which will assist Averett in its aspiration for 1,100 traditional students. "It is an exciting time at Averett University as we drive strategic growth centered on our students' success and their enhanced experience," said Dr. Tiffany M. Franks, President of Averett University.

 Columbia, Mo. – Columbia College has elected to add two new sport programs to its lineup of teams beginning in the fall of 2017. The Cougars will be adding men's lacrosse and women's bowling. "We are excited about the expansion of athletic offerings at Columbia College," stated athletic director and head men's basketball coach Bob Burchard. Earlham College (D3 IN) Adds Lacrosse

RICHMOND, Ind. – The Earlham College Athletics Department continues to broaden its programming. Effective in the 2017-18 academic year, Earlham will sponsor men's and women's lacrosse as varsity sports.

"Adding men's and women's lacrosse on campus and to our department allows Earlham to be attractive to yet another population of prospective and current students," Director of Athletics Mike Bergum said. Heidelberg University (DIII OH) Adds Lacrosse

TIFFIN -- Heidelberg University will add both women's and men's lacrosse to its slate of varsity athletic programs, with intercollegiate action beginning during the 2016-17 academic year.

 "The popularity of lacrosse expanding in the region, and as a result, the interest to add the sport at Heidelberg is at an all-time high," said athletic director Matt Palm. "With the Ohio High School
Athletic Association adding lacrosse as a sanctioned sport for 2017, the time is right for us."

Heidelberg is the ninth school in the Ohio Athletic Conference to add lacrosse, with the traditional season taking place in the spring.

Benedictine College (NAIA KS) Adds Lacrosse

The Benedictine College Athletic Department will add both men's and women's lacrosse to its intercollegiate lineup for the spring of 2016. "We have observed the growth of lacrosse as an intercollegiate sport in our region and nationally," said Benedictine Athletic Director Charlie Gartenmayer.

"We spent a great deal of time investigating the positive impact a program like Lacrosse will make on Benedictine College. This new program provides an additional opportunity for prospective student-athletes to explore the opportunities Benedictine College offers in academic, social and spiritual development in addition to an excellent athletic tradition."

A search for head coaches for both programs will begin immediately with a target of spring of 2016 for both teams to compete as part of the Raven Athletics varsity lineup. Currently, Benedictine has both men's and women's lacrosse as club sports.

Northern Michigan University (DII) & Ottawa University (NAIA KS) Add Lacrosse

MARQUETTE, Mich. – Northern Michigan University Athletic Director Forrest Karr announced Friday that the NMU Board of Trustees unanimously voted to add four intercollegiate sports. Women’s golf and men’s swimming and diving will be implemented next fall. Women’s lacrosse and men’s soccer will follow in 2016.

 All four sports will compete in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Ottawa, Kansas – Ottawa University announced today the addition of men's and women's lacrosse. With the addition of these two teams, it brings OU's total number of varsity athletic teams to 20. The search for a head coach and recruitment of student-athletes will begin immediately, with competition slated to begin in 2015-16. Lacrosse is a spring sport, which fits well into the University's athletic offerings from a scheduling and facility standpoint.

Lacrosse was developed by Native Americans as early as the 15th century and was played for recreation, the settlement of tribal disputes and as a form of warrior training. Goals could be up to several miles apart with no sidelines to constrain play. Like so many others around the country, Ottawa University is opting to return to the country's original athletic roots, as well as its own roots through its ties with the Ottawa Tribe, to play the oldest game on the continent.

University of Saint Mary (NAIA KS) & Movarian College (DIII PA) Add Lacrosse

The University of Saint Mary has hired its first ever lacrosse coach as it builds toward the launch of men's and women's club-level lacrosse teams that will take the field in the Spring 2015 semester. Lacrosse Coach Matt Kimsey comes to the University of Saint Mary Spires from the Blue Valley West Jaguars lacrosse program, which he coached for the past three years.

 He will shepherd the development of Saint Mary Men's & Women's Lacrosse—first as a club-level program for Spring 2015, and then as a varsity program the following year. Kimsey already has several recruits committed to playing lacrosse at Saint Mary, and USM athletics is offering scholarships to student-athletes to come play lacrosse for the Spires. "For me, the excitement is about building a new program here," Kimsey said.

"The University of Saint Mary has a real community feel, a real family feel. Building a lacrosse program around that is a natural fit.

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- Moravian College will elevate its men's and women's lacrosse teams from club to varsity status beginning with the 2016 season. Since 2011, both the men's and women's teams have competed in the National College Lacrosse League for club teams. Previously, Moravian's women's team completed at the NCAA Division III intercollegiate varsity level from 2003 to 2010. The men's team squad competed on the varsity level from 2004 through 2010.

"Restoring men's and women's lacrosse to varsity level competition in 2015-16 is another step in Moravian College's growth and revitalization," said Dr. Bryon L. Grigsby '90, president. "There is a growing interest in playing lacrosse among college bound students in the mid-Atlantic region. We intend to attract those student-athletes with a transformative quality education and an outstanding intercollegiate sports experience."

North Greenville University (DII SC) Adds Lacrosse

Tigerville, S.C.—The North Greenville athletic department will grow by three sports starting during the 2014-2015 calendar year, with the addition of men’s volleyball, as well as men’s and women’s lacrosse. The North Greenville athletic program currently boasts 16 men’s and women’s varsity teams, including 15 which compete in Conference Carolinas competition. The three new teams will also compete in the conference.
North Greenville will be the tenth Conference Carolinas affiliated institution to add men’s volleyball, a sport in which division’s I-III compete against each other. The Trojans of Mount Olive College took home the Conference Carolinas title in 2014, while UC Irvine and Springfield University reeled in national championships.

Illinois Wesleyan University (DIII) Adds Lacrosse

BLOOMINGTON — Illinois Wesleyan announced Wednesday it will add a men’s lacrosse team in the spring of 2014 and women’s lacrosse the following spring.

“Lacrosse is the fastest-growing sport in the Midwest and is an emerging sport among College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin schools,” said IWU athletic director Dennie Bridges. “Offering lacrosse gives a significant number of high school students another reason to consider attending Illinois Wesleyan.”

 Bridges said a search for a men’s lacrosse coach will begin immediately with a similar search for a women’s coach to begin next spring. Lacrosse home games will be at Tucci Stadium.

Tusculum College (TN DII) To Add Lacrosse

Men's lacrosse is currently played at Catawba, Coker, Lenoir-Rhyne, Mars Hill, Queens and Wingate, while women's lacrosse is sponsored at Catawba, Lenoir-Rhyne, Newberry and Queens.

Tusculum is poised to add both men's and women's lacrosse in advance of the 2013-14 season, while Wingate and Coker also plan to develop women's programs prior to it becoming a SAC sport.

Men's and women's track are currently sponsored sports at Anderson, Brevard, Carson-Newman, Lenoir-Rhyne, Mars Hill, Queens and Wingate.
