Bryant & Stratton College (NJCAA WI) Adds Men's Lacrosse

MILWAUKEE — Next year, Bryant & Stratton College (WI) will be beginning its lacrosse program and the program’s first head coach, BJ Bargas, will be leading the way. Bargas has plenty of experience when it comes to coaching lacrosse.

“I helped coach Sussex Hamilton this past spring, helping it to it's first playoff win in program history while also getting a layout of the land here in Wisconsin. I [also] coached at Buford High School this past season, which led to a state championship,” Bargas said. “Prior to that, I actually started a high school program at East Forsyth High School in 2021. Was there for a couple of seasons and worked with a group that had various backgrounds of experienced players and players that had never picked up a stick before. It really paved the way for me to understand how to start something from scratch.”

Before landing at East Forsyth, Bargas coached in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and played club ball for the University of New Mexico. With a new program set to begin, he already has a plethora of players ready to make the inaugural season a successful one.

The College of DuPage (NJCAA IL) Adds Lacrosse

One of the fastest growing sports in America will be coming to College of DuPage. Director of Athletics and Recreation Ryan Kaiser has named long-time Chicagoland lacrosse prep coach Bill Sanford as the Chaps' men's head coach. The sport begins play in 2023-24, allowing Sanford a full year to recruit the sport. "We're thrilled to have Bill lead our efforts as we begin the process of building the men's lacrosse program here at COD,'' Kaiser said. "It was very clear from the beginning that Bill understands our vision. He wants to win and that vision mirrors one another in making COD the preeminent power in junior college men's lacrosse.''

Gary Cope, who helped originate girls lacrosse at Lockport High School, has been named head women's coach for the Chaparrals. Both men's and women's lacrosse will be added in 2023-24, bringing the total number of athletic programs available to 21. "The ability to build a program from the ground-up is what interested me from the beginning at COD,'' said Cope, who is on staff at Lockport HS as a para-professional in special education. "I want to lean on my experience from Lockport. It's an honor to be a part of the Midwest's first community college lacrosse program.''

Northern Michigan University (DII) & Ottawa University (NAIA KS) Add Lacrosse

MARQUETTE, Mich. – Northern Michigan University Athletic Director Forrest Karr announced Friday that the NMU Board of Trustees unanimously voted to add four intercollegiate sports. Women’s golf and men’s swimming and diving will be implemented next fall. Women’s lacrosse and men’s soccer will follow in 2016.

 All four sports will compete in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Ottawa, Kansas – Ottawa University announced today the addition of men's and women's lacrosse. With the addition of these two teams, it brings OU's total number of varsity athletic teams to 20. The search for a head coach and recruitment of student-athletes will begin immediately, with competition slated to begin in 2015-16. Lacrosse is a spring sport, which fits well into the University's athletic offerings from a scheduling and facility standpoint.

Lacrosse was developed by Native Americans as early as the 15th century and was played for recreation, the settlement of tribal disputes and as a form of warrior training. Goals could be up to several miles apart with no sidelines to constrain play. Like so many others around the country, Ottawa University is opting to return to the country's original athletic roots, as well as its own roots through its ties with the Ottawa Tribe, to play the oldest game on the continent.

Johnson State College (DIII VT) Adds Women's Lacrosse

JOHNSON, Vt –Johnson State College is adding women's lacrosse to its NCAA Division III varsity program starting with the 2014-15 academic year, becoming the eighth college in the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) to offer women's lacrosse. It will mark the seventh varsity sport available to women at JSC and the college's 13th overall.

The move reflects the growing popularity of the sport at the high school and college levels. Girls lacrosse is the fastest growing high school sport in the U.S. and in Vermont, where 32 high schools now offer the program.

Formation of The California Junior College Lacrosse Association Announced

Santa Rosa, California – April 10, 2013 – The growth of lacrosse continues to boom throughout the state of California and junior colleges are no exception. Set to begin in the fall of 2013, California junior college men’s lacrosse clubs are invited to compete under one umbrella within the California Junior College Lacrosse Association (CJCLA).

The CJCLA is dedicated to expanding junior college lacrosse opportunities for the student-athletes of California. Membership in the CJCLA is open to any California junior college lacrosse program that is officially recognized as a student club by their institution. The mission of the CJCLA is to provide new program assistance, student-athlete eligibility requirements, administering of individual awards and accolades for players, and hosting of the CJCLA Championship Tournament at the conclusion of the regular season.

Northhampton Community College (NJCAA PA) Adds Lacrosse

Director of Athletics Troy Tucker has announced that Northampton Community College will add cross country and men's lacrosse to their intercollegiate athletic program for the 2013-2014 season.

 "We are very excited to be adding sports to our program," stated Tucker. "In a very short time, we have been able to establish ourselves as one of the top Division III junior college athletic programs in the country. The addition of cross country and men's lacrosse shows the commitment that the college has to intercollegiate athletics and the belief in the positive aspects that a well-rounded program can bring to the campus and the community."

Georgetown College (NAIA KY) Adds Women's Lacrosse

Lacrosse is by far one of the fastest growing team sports in the United States. Since 2001, youth participation is up 138 percent to nearly 300,000. No sport has grown faster at the high school level and in the past six years is the fasting-growing sport in the NCAA with 755 college teams – 433 of which are women's teams. This does not include more than 500 college club programs, nearly 200 of which are women's teams that compete at the US Lacrosse Intercollegiate Association level.

ASA College Adds Men's Lacrosse

Brooklyn, NY– ASA College Athletic Director Ken Wilcox announced the addition of a men’s lacrosse program. The Avengers will begin National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) competition in the 2012 spring season. The program becomes the first junior college lacrosse team in New York City. In addition to winning games, the goal of the program is to graduate student-athletes so they can continue their academic and athletic careers at four-year colleges and universities.

Newberry College (SC) Adds Women's Lacrosse

NEWBERRY, S.C. - Newberry College leadership announced the addition of women's lacrosse as the College's 17th intercollegiate varsity sports program today. Emily Bikowski will serve as the program's first head coach as the program will begin immediately with the intention of the Wolves taking to the field for the 2012 season, which is played in the spring semester.

The addition of women's lacrosse is the first new sport added to the intercollegiate athletics program since the wrestling program was announced in 2004.

"Women's lacrosse is a very exciting sport and one which we're pleased to provide as a new opportunity for student-athletes to participate in," said senior vice president for institutional advancement and intercollegiate athletics Brad Edwards. "Women's lacrosse will bring another exciting, fan-friendly atmosphere to Setzler Field and we look forward to the community and our great supporters joining us there for the 2012 season."
