Corban University (NAIA OR) Adds Men's and Women's Lacrosse

SALEM, Ore. – Corban University Athletic Director Twiggs Reed announced on Monday that the Warriors would be adding two varsity programs, with men's and women's lacrosse officially joining the sporting slate in the fall of 2019 at Corban.

"This is an exciting time for Corban University and our athletic department," said Reed. "Lacrosse has been the fastest growing sport in America for the past 20 years, and it is a part of our strategic plan to increase student enrollment as well as to bring high-character, Christ-centered students to our campus. I'm excited for the future of Corban Athletics, and I'm thrilled with the addition of these two teams!"

The addition of these two programs bring Corban's total varsity teams to 16. It joins men's wrestling as one of three new varsity athletic programs that begin in the fall of 2019 at Corban. "We are ecstatic about bringing men's and women's lacrosse to Corban," said Corban University President Sheldon Nord. "It provides a fantastic opportunity for Christian lacrosse players to come to a University where they can learn about how to make a difference in the world for Jesus Christ while getting to play the sport that they love, and that is something we believe is very exciting."

Purchase College (DIII NY) Adds Lacrosse

Purchase, NY (May 7, 2014) – The Purchase College athletic department is proud to announce that we will be offering men's lacrosse as an official NCAA Division III intercollegiate sport for 2015-16, said Athletic Director Chris Bisignano today.

The addition of men's lacrosse will boost the ever-growing department to 17 varsity sports in two years and it also complements the recently added women's lacrosse team, which just completed its second full season – one that was filled with several highlights, most notably the program's first victory, its first conference win and two all-conference distinctions for the team's top two players.

Adding men's lacrosse to a program that now includes women's lacrosse will not only enable Purchase to recruit quality student-athletes from the region and nationally, but it will also allow the department to continue to build on its recent success, Bisignano said. At the heart of that expected success will be the program's new leadership. A national search for the first-ever head coach for the new varsity program will begin immediately.

Would BC Drop Baseball for Lacrosse?

Brad Bates faces a series of decisions with regards to Men's Basketball in the coming days and weeks. He knows. We know. And it really should be the top of mind, since outside of Football, basketball should be our biggest revenue generator. However, an empty Conte is causing deficits, not surpluses. Once dealt with then his next big issue will be BC Baseball.

Baseball's problems are two fold. First Bates needs to determine if we are any good. The Florida swing wasn't encouraging, but there is still a lot of baseball to play. If Gambino doesn't show improvement and competitiveness, then he needs to go. Being a BC grad is always a plus, but you cannot overlook losing forever. Gambino's ties to Gene and the fact he was selected over more experienced candidates, doesn't bode well for him getting the benefit of the doubt from Bates.

W. Lax Among Sports Being Considered for Reduction Of Out-Of-Season Practice/Competitions

All NCAA Division 1 sports face a 10% reduction in competition, but the sports targeted for major cuts through elimination of spring competition are soccer, volleyball, women’s lacrosse, field hockey, softball and cross country. Division 1 football, basketball, baseball, ice hockey, and men’s lacrosse would not be affected by the elimination of non-championship season competition. Nor would Division 2, Division 3 and NAIA schools be affected.

Non-championship season competition refers to non-countable games, basically springtime development games. All of the extended football, baseball and basketball season is constituted as regular season competition and counts on their record. Soccer already has one of the shortest competitive seasons in the NCAA and by eliminating the developmental games, the NCAA further marginalizes the sport.

NCAA To Test Shot-Clock in Two Scrimmages This Weekend

Two men’s lacrosse scrimmages will be played this weekend with experimental rules that stakeholders hope will increase the pace of play.

On Saturday, UMBC will host Georgetown with the following experimental rules being implemented:

If a team is given the stall warning, it has 30 seconds to put a shot on target (goal/save/rebound/pipe). Current rules require the team to keep the ball in the attack area during a stall warning.

On Sunday, North Carolina and Ohio State will scrimmage in Towson, Maryland, with an experimental shot clock being used.

Teams will have 60 seconds (first half) and 75 seconds (second half) to put a shot on goal (goal/save/rebound/pipe) after gaining possession. A shot that misses the goal will not count for this purpose.
