Colby-Sawyer College (D3 NH) Adds Men's Lacrosse

Colby-Sawyer College will add two new varsity sports programs — softball in the fall of 2025 and men’s lacrosse in the fall of 2026.

Both programs will compete in NCAA Division III, which emphasizes the importance of academics alongside athletics. This expansion of the college’s athletic offerings reflects its commitment to providing a comprehensive experience to student-athletes and promoting student engagement through diverse sports programs.

“The addition of these two highly competitive and popular varsity pr

ograms will be a tremendous benefit both for our student-athletes and for the campus community at large,” Director of Athletics Jeanette McKillop said. “The introduction of softball and men’s lacrosse will not only enhance the college’s athletic portfolio but also create new opportunities for student-athletes to compete at a collegiate level.”

Both sports are popular among college students in the region. According to McKillop, the number of men’s lacrosse programs in Division III has surged in the Northeast as schools have recognized the sport's appeal and its ability to draw student interest. As of 2023, more than 200 colleges field men’s lacrosse teams. This growth reflects a broader trend in youth sports, where lacrosse has gained popularity particularly among high school athletes. Because of its current popularity, lacrosse will return to the Olympic games in 2028.

University of Saint Mary (NAIA KS) & Movarian College (DIII PA) Add Lacrosse

The University of Saint Mary has hired its first ever lacrosse coach as it builds toward the launch of men's and women's club-level lacrosse teams that will take the field in the Spring 2015 semester. Lacrosse Coach Matt Kimsey comes to the University of Saint Mary Spires from the Blue Valley West Jaguars lacrosse program, which he coached for the past three years.

He will shepherd the development of Saint Mary Men's & Women's Lacrosse—first as a club-level program for Spring 2015, and then as a varsity program the following year. Kimsey already has several recruits committed to playing lacrosse at Saint Mary, and USM athletics is offering scholarships to student-athletes to come play lacrosse for the Spires. "For me, the excitement is about building a new program here," Kimsey said.

"The University of Saint Mary has a real community feel, a real family feel. Building a lacrosse program around that is a natural fit.

University of Northwestern (MN DIII) and Palm Beach Atlantic (FL DII) Add Lacrosse

ST. PAUL – The University of Northwestern is excited to announce the addition if its 19th varsity sport, women's lacrosse, which will officially begin playing in the 2015-2016 academic year. Northwestern is just the second post-secondary institution in any of the NCAA's three divisions in Minnesota to sponsor women's lacrosse as a varsity sport.

Northwestern's lacrosse team will practice and play in the university's revamped Reynolds Field complex, a $10.7 million project that includes new artificially turfed fields and locker rooms in addition to new spaces for an athletic training room, updated bathrooms and a concession stand. "Adding women's lacrosse is a natural fit for Northwestern with our new facility offering and the institution's growth plan," said Dr. Matt Hill, vice president for student life and athletics. Hill continued, "Offering lacrosse as a collegiate varsity sport makes sense as interest in the sport in our region has soared in recent years.

We're excited to feature lacrosse at the collegiate level for girls in Minnesota and the surrounding states who want to stay close to home after high school and continue to play their sport while continuing their education."

BU, UNH, UConn and Northeastern Talk About Their Men's Lacrosse Futures

In this months issue of New England Lacrosse Journal Braden Campbell asks New England colleges without Men's Lacrosse if they can see the sport in their future and gets some interesting answers.

Boston University A.D. Mike Lynch

"I would say it's very serious, I would say that we're in the final stages of decision-making in terms of whether or not it's something that BU would add in the near term"

Northeastern A.D. Peter Roby

"We've had people that are involved in the program, especially on the men's side, who have come to us and inquired, (and) alumni who have indicated interest. I think just given the popularity of lacrosse as a sport, given where we're located, and coming off the heels of our decisions around football, I think it was natural for people to start speculating."

UConn Associate A.D. Mike Enright

"We realize it's an up-and-coming sport, but we have 24 sports, we have a large budget. We're not looking to add any sports right now."

New Hampshire A.D. Marty Scarano

"I think we all believe - and my president is particularly fond of lacrosse - that it would be a great fit for us. Unfortunately, we just can't afford it. We're holding on desperately to what we have right now. I'm optimistic that when women's lacrosse gets into the tournament and gets going, that it's going to inspire more of the male side to get on board with this. We have a number of alumns that had done very well, they're smart businessmen. If we can get a number of those people together, maybe we can start trying to figure this out."

Boston College and Stonehill College also were referenced in the article as stating they had no plans to elevate their teams to varsity status.
