Midland University (NAIA NE) Adds Men's Lacrosse

FREMONT, Neb. – Midland University has announced the addition of Men's Lacrosse to their athletic department, marking the university's 32nd varsity program which continues their commitment to invest in the student experience. Men's lacrosse will begin recruiting for the 2019-2020 school year and compete as an affiliate member with the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) within the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), along with the Midland Women's Lacrosse team.

 Midland University has experienced record growth over the last ten years and is recognized as Nebraska's fastest-growing college. Students are drawn to the institution's dynamic course offerings, scholarship opportunities, and inclusive community. Home to the largest athletic department in Nebraska, Midland boasts more than 850 student-athletes participating in now 32 varsity sports. 

"Midland University strives to be a leader in creating opportunities for students to pursue their passions and engage in learning experiences that go beyond the classroom. Men's lacrosse is a growing sport, and we are excited to offer this opportunity to our students while earning their degree," stated Jody Horner, Midland University President. Further bolstering the exciting new athletic program addition, Midland is pleased to announce T.J. Westfall as the Men's Lacrosse team's first head coach. Westfall comes to Midland University from Lincoln, Nebraska where he has been an integral part of the Lincoln Rampage lacrosse program since 2008, as a player during his prep days, later as an assistant coach. Westfall served as head coach from 2015-2017.

Newbury College (D3 MA) Adds Men's Lacrosse

BROOKLINE, Mass. - Newbury College is pleased to announce that it will add men’s lacrosse to its athletics lineup in the New England Collegiate Conference, beginning with the spring 2019 season. The College recently approved adding the sport to its intercollegiate athletics program, which currently sponsors 16 intercollegiate sport programs; eight men’s teams and eight women’s teams. 

According to CollegeCross.com, 27 institutions added a lacrosse program in 2017, including the addition of Newbury College’s women’s lacrosse team. Sixteen of the 27 started men’s lacrosse programs.

“Since we announced the addition of our women’s lacrosse program two years ago, we have experienced an increase in interest for men’s lacrosse on campus.” said Newbury College Director of Athletics Jonathan Harper. “I am pleased that Newbury continues to strengthen the Athletics program by adding a sport that is very popular in the Northeast, especially at the high school level.”

Marian University (D3 WI) and University of Montevallo (D2 AL) Add Lacrosse

FOND DU LAC, Wis. – Marian University director of athletics Jason Bartelt is pleased to announce the addition of men's lacrosse and the hiring of Reid Mayberry as the program's first head coach. The Sabres will begin play in the 2017-18 season.

 "I am extremely excited to bring lacrosse in as an NCAA sport to Marian University and our athletic department," Bartelt said. "Lacrosse is an up-and-coming-sport in our area and will have a

tremendous impact on our campus." The university approved the addition of men's lacrosse to Marian's athletics offerings earlier this month and will become the 21st varsity sport. The addition of men's lacrosse is expected to add 50 to 60 student-athletes to the university, athletic administrators have stated

 "Lacrosse is an exciting, fast paced game of skill and teamwork. I'm very excited to add it to the collection of sports already offered at Marian University." Marian President Dr. Andrew Manion said. "I'm also really pleased to be adding Reid to our coaching staff. He has exceptional experience as a coach and a player at exemplary NCAA Division III lacrosse programs."

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – University of Montevallo President John W. Stewart III recently announced the addition of men's lacrosse as the 18th intercollegiate sport. Men's lacrosse will become the eighth men's intercollegiate sport at the University. It is the seventh intercollegiate sport added at the University in the past four years.

 "I would like to thank the University Board of Trustees and President Stewart for approving men's lacrosse," said Athletic Director Mark Richard. "The lacrosse community continues to expand on the national landscape and in the state of Alabama and we're excited to be part of the sport's growth." The men's lacrosse program will begin its inaugural season in the spring of 2018. A national search to find the first head coach in the history of the program will begin immediately.

Earlham College (D3 IN) Adds Lacrosse

RICHMOND, Ind. – The Earlham College Athletics Department continues to broaden its programming. Effective in the 2017-18 academic year, Earlham will sponsor men's and women's lacrosse as varsity sports.

"Adding men's and women's lacrosse on campus and to our department allows Earlham to be attractive to yet another population of prospective and current students," Director of Athletics Mike Bergum said. Chowan University (DII NC) Adds Men's Lacrosse

MURFREESBORO- Chowan University continues to provide competitive athletic opportunities with the official addition of men's lacrosse for the 2016-17 academic year. The search for Chowan's first men's lacrosse coach concluded with the hiring of Jim Griffin, who eagerly accepted the challenge of implementing the Hawks' first recruiting class.

"I am very excited to begin men's lacrosse here at Chowan University. The academic programs,

facilities, and moral culture make this a homerun for men's lacrosse. The University sits in great proximity to lacrosse hotbeds in every direction….and will offer an ideal environment for student-athletes at the NCAA Division II level," Griffin stated. Vice President/Director of Athletics, Ozzie McFarland added, "I believe we have found the perfect person to start our men's lacrosse program…one who has already started two programs. Jim has strong ties to North Carolina…He will be an excellent addition to our staff and should help us meet our goal of being one of the best lacrosse programs in the region". With the addition of men's lacrosse, Chowan's athletic department supports 18 athletic teams with eight men's programs and ten women's programs as well as a co-ed cheerleading team.

University of Northwestern (MN DIII) and Palm Beach Atlantic (FL DII) Add Lacrosse

ST. PAUL – The University of Northwestern is excited to announce the addition if its 19th varsity sport, women's lacrosse, which will officially begin playing in the 2015-2016 academic year. Northwestern is just the second post-secondary institution in any of the NCAA's three divisions in Minnesota to sponsor women's lacrosse as a varsity sport.

 Northwestern's lacrosse team will practice and play in the university's revamped Reynolds Field complex, a $10.7 million project that includes new artificially turfed fields and locker rooms in addition to new spaces for an athletic training room, updated bathrooms and a concession stand. "Adding women's lacrosse is a natural fit for Northwestern with our new facility offering and the institution's growth plan," said Dr. Matt Hill, vice president for student life and athletics. Hill continued, "Offering lacrosse as a collegiate varsity sport makes sense as interest in the sport in our region has soared in recent years.

We're excited to feature lacrosse at the collegiate level for girls in Minnesota and the surrounding states who want to stay close to home after high school and continue to play their sport while continuing their education."

PBA currently sponsors 12 varsity sports including baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s tennis and volleyball. As part of the provisional agreement, PBA is required to add men’s and women’s lacrosse and men’s and women’s distance track by the 2017-18 season. Currently, the Sailfish compete in men’s and women’s lacrosse at the club level.

The SSC is currently in its first season of men’s lacrosse and recently announced its sponsorship of women’s lacrosse to begin in the spring of 2015. The addition of women’s lacrosse will grow the conference sponsorship to 18 intercollegiate sports that compete in NCAA Division II.

Carroll University (D3 WI) Adds Lacrosse

(Waukesha, Wis.) - Carroll University will add men's and women's lacrosse for the start of the 2014-2015 academic year, announced Joe Baker, Director of Athletics. Pioneers lacrosse teams will begin competing in the spring of 2015, increasing the number of Carroll's National Collegiate Athletic Association-sponsored athletics programs from 20 to 22.

"Lacrosse is a quickly emerging sport in the Midwest and we are excited to add it to our existing intercollegiate sports," said Baker. "We have investigated the potential for athletic growth over the past few years and believe now is the right time to add men's and women's lacrosse. We are confident we will provide a quality athletic environment to current and future student-athletes."

Women's Lacrosse Postseason Bracket Expanded

INDIANAPOLIS — Women’s rowing is one of three Division I sports whose championship brackets will expand in 2013. In August, the NCAA Executive Committee approved a budget that included a recommendation from the Division I Championships/Sport Management Cabinet to expand championships in the Football Championship Subdivision, women’s lacrosse and rowing.

The two women’s sports will expand their brackets in the spring of 2013, while the FCS bracket will expand in the fall of 2013. The FCS bracket will grow from 20 to 24 teams in 2013, while the women’s lacrosse bracket will increase from 16 to 26 teams and rowing moves from 16 to 22 teams in the spring.

Lacrosse A New Recruiting Tool For Private Colleges

PAINESVILLE, Ohio -- The only reason Julia Kudla visited Lake Erie College was because it offered lacrosse. At the time, the then-senior at Souderton High School in Harleysville, Pa. wasn't even sure where Painesville was.

"I didn't really know much about the Cleveland area," said Kudla, who was contacted after Lake Erie's lacrosse coach saw her play in an East Coast tournament. "I was pleasantly surprised when I visited the campus."

Lacrosse has become the latest recruitment tool for private universities in Ohio and other Midwestern states. Relatively inexpensive to start, the sport is growing in popularity at high schools. By offering the chance to play at the next level, colleges hope to attract students who otherwise wouldn't have considered those campuses.

Wilmington (OH) and Midland (NE) Add Lacrosse

Wilmington College will sponsor men’s and women’s varsity lacrosse teams, beginning with the 2012-13 academic year.

“A significant percentage of Wilmington College’s students participate in intercollegiate athletics,” Wilmington College interim president Jim Reynolds said. “The College is committed to providing the most complete collegiate experience possible for our students, and adding lacrosse — the fastest growing sport in the nation — will help us continue that mission.”

(Fremont, Neb.) Midland University President, Dr. Ben Sasse, today announced major changes to the Midland lacrosse program for the 2011-12 school year, beginning with the hiring of Christine Hatton of Conyers, Ga. as the new women’s lacrosse coach.

Additionally, Sasse announced that startingthis year, Midland will be playing varsity lacrosse as part of the National Women’s Lacrosse League. The move takes the program from club sport and provides opportunities for Midland’s lacrosse team to play varsity teams at other small colleges.
