Clemson University (D1 SC) Adds Women's Lacrosse

CLEMSON, S.C. – Clemson University will add women’s lacrosse and women’s gymnastics as varsity programs in the next two years, Director of Athletics Dan Radakovich announced on Thursday, live on Packer and Durham on ACC Network. Lacrosse is projected to begin competition in 2022-23, with gymnastics beginning competition in the 2023-24 academic year.

Bob Jones University (SC Pursing NCAA D3 Membership) Adds Women's Lacrosse

Bob Jones University Director of Athletics, Dr. Neal Ring, announced today that the Bruins athletics department would be adding women's lacrosse as the next intercollegiate sport at BJU. With the addition of lacrosse, Ring also announced the suspension of adding a women's softball program.

"After announcing the addition of baseball and softball, we were excited to see how God would lead in building those programs," Ring said. "While the baseball program has begun to build a solid foundation, we continued to run into several obstacles in pursuing women's softball. As such, we feel it best to pursue another option in our Spring sport offerings."

In October of 2017, BJU announced their pursuit of NCAA DIII membership while maintaining their affiliation in the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA). One of the criteria to make the transition was for the program to add additional sports in the Spring. The Bruins athletic department currently features fifteen varsity programs. The program had planned for the baseball and softball teams to play their first season in spring of 2020 but decided to use another exploratory year while making program adjustments.

Youngstown State (D1 OH) and Wilson College (D3 PA) Add Women's Lacrosse

Youngstown State will add a men's swimming and diving program as well as a women's lacrosse team in the near future, Executive Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Ron Strollo announced on Monday. Men's swimming and diving will become the 20th Division I sport currently offered by the YSU Athletic Department when it begins competition this fall. YSU previously competed in men's swimming and diving from 1964 through 1984 and 1949-51. Women's lacrosse is scheduled to debut in the spring of 2021.

"We're excited about this new opportunity to recruit high school students from Ohio, the region and internationally to pursue their academic and athletic goals at Youngstown State in both sports," Strollo said. "Our swimming facility is one of the best in the area and we look forward to showcasing it with both our men's and women's programs. The growth of women's lacrosse in Ohio and throughout the Midwest has seen an increased number of schools sponsor the sport and we are thrilled to add it at Youngstown State."

Lander University (D2 SC) Adds Lacrosse

GREENWOOD – Lander University will add men's and women's lacrosse to its NCAA Division II varsity sports offerings, athletics director Brian Reese announced Tuesday. Both teams will begin competition in the spring of 2020.

"Lacrosse is an exciting sport that is loved by both fans and participants, and a natural fit for Lander as it grows in this region of the country," said Reese. "The addition of lacrosse will not only be beneficial to our athletic department, but to our university as a whole. We are confident we can build programs that compete successfully at both the conference and national level."

By adding one of the nation's fastest growing sports at all levels, Lander is set to become just the fifth university in South Carolina to offer NCAA Division II men's lacrosse and the eighth to sponsor Division II women's lacrosse.

Newberry College (D2 SC) Adds Men's Lacrosse

NEWBERRY – Director of Athletics Ralph Patterson has announced the addition of men’s lacrosse as Newberry’s 20th NCAA Division II sport and the hiring of Nick Cotter to lead the program into its first season of competition in the spring of 2018. Lacrosse has been a mainstay on campus since 2012, when the women’s game first came to Newberry. Home games will be played at Setzler Field, with the men’s lacrosse program joining football, field hockey, and women’s lacrosse at the facility that first hosted Newberry contests in 1922.

Cotter will serve as the program’s inaugural head coach. Cotter had a remarkable collegiate playing career as a three-time All-American at Dowling College that led the Golden Lions to their first-ever Division II national title game appearance in 2006. He has spent the last three seasons as an assistant coach at Saint Leo University in Florida, where he helped the 2016 Lions to a 9-5 overall record and a final ranking just outside the top 20 in the coaches’ poll.

“I’m thankful that Newberry has given me the opportunity to come in and start the program from scratch,” said Cotter. “I look forward to contributing to the winning culture here and joining the Newberry family.” “We had an outstanding pool of applicants,” said Patterson, “and Nick's name kept coming up from people we had conversations with in our search. We're excited that he's joining the Newberry College family. We look forward to watching him build a great lacrosse program.”
