Thomas More University (NAIA KY) Adds Men's Lacrosse

Thomas More University President Joseph L. Chillo, LP.D., and Director of Athletics Terry Connor have announced the addition of men's lacrosse to the sports offering in the University's athletic department. Men's lacrosse will be the 29th athletic program at Thomas More, which continues the University's commitment to invest in the student experience. 

 A national search will begin immediately for a full-time head coach for the team.

The University will begin recruiting for the 2021-2022 academic year, which will be club season as the program begins to build a roster. Men's lacrosse will begin playing a varsity schedule during the 2022-2023 academic year. In addition to beginning men's lacrosse and hiring a full-time head coach, Thomas More will also begin a national search for the women's lacrosse program's first full-time head coach. As the women's lacrosse program has grown over the last few years, the University is investing in that program and the women's lacrosse student-athletes to provide them the best experience on and off the field that a full-time head coach can provide. 

 "Lacrosse is a growing sport and we want to be able to commit to our students by providing opportunities where they're needed," said Connor. "The new full-time head coach for women's lacrosse will take the program to another level, truly raising the bar for that team and the student-athletes already involved. The new men's team adds numerous opportunities for current and prospective Saints."

Atlantic Sun Conference to Sponsor Men's Lacrosse

ATLANTA Ga. - The ASUN Conference proudly announces the formation of ASUN Men's Lacrosse. This is the second time in nine years that the ASUN has built a new Men's Lacrosse conference. The partnership with the Southern Conference continues as the ASUN again builds opportunities for student-athletes. The ASUN first built a Men's Lacrosse conference in Fall 2012 when it announced ASUN Men's Lacrosse with a founding membership of Furman, High Point, Jacksonville, Mercer, Richmond, and VMI.

 That group began play in the 2013-14 season with the Richmond Spiders earning an automatic bid into the NCAA Championship. Today, the ASUN announces a new group of six that includes Air Force, Bellarmine, Cleveland State, Detroit Mercy, Robert Morris, and Utah. "The primary goal of our lacrosse partnership with the Southern Conference is to maximize opportunity," ASUN Commissioner Ted Gumbart said. "Our first responsibility is the highest level of service to our full member institutions; when partnerships offer increased opportunity for all, that meets our primary ASUN BEAM of Students First."

Spalding University (D3 KY) Adds Lacrosse

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Spalding University Department of Athletics is proud to announce the addition of men's and women's lacrosse to the list NCAA sponsored sports. Men's and women's lacrosse are the 17th and 18th sports to join Spalding University Athletics.

Men's and women's lacrosse will begin adding a full complement of student-athletes upon the hiring of head coaches with an inaugural season targeted for 2021-22. With the sport of lacrosse continuing to grow nationally and regionally, Spalding becomes the third NCAA Division III program in the state to sponsor lacrosse, which has a season beginning in February and concluding in May.

University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire (D3) Adds Women's Lacrosse

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (blugolds.com) - The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire has announced the launch of a plan for investing in its future to ensure student success and bring talent to the region for years to come.

"We are in the midst of an exciting time for UW-Eau Claire," Chancellor James Schmidt said. "We are making strides toward improving success outcomes for our students. We're launching new in-demand academic programs and moving forward in important initiatives like our research collaboration with Mayo Clinic Health System and our public-private partnership for the new Sonnentag Event and Recreation Complex — all developments that will bring significant new opportunities for our students while serving the needs of the Chippewa Valley and our state. That's what this new investment plan is all about."

The expansion of UW-Eau Claire's athletics teams will include the reinstatement of men's baseball (which was discontinued in 1995) and the addition of women's lacrosse in the spring 2021 season, as well as the addition of men's soccer in the fall 2021 season.

Warren Wilson College (D3 NC) Adds Lacrosse

Warren Wilson College announced it will add lacrosse as a new varsity sport. The college is beginning a nationwide search to hire coaches for both men's and women's lacrosse teams. The coaches will focus on recruiting full teams during this academic year and will begin to practice and compete in the 2020-2021 academic year.

 "Adding lacrosse advances our vision of expanding athletic programming and increasing student athlete enrollment," said Joni Williamson, director of athletics and adventure sports at Warren Wilson College. "It's an exciting time for Warren Wilson athletics." Warren Wilson's announcement comes as the college is in the process of joining the NCAA Division III membership. The NCAA has approved Warren Wilson's application for exploratory membership. The introduction of a new team sport will help satisfy membership requirements.

Urbana University (D2 OH) Adds Women's Lacrosse

URBANA, Ohio – The Urbana University Department of Athletics announced it will add two sports with the revival of women's lacrosse and the addition of women's water polo. Both sports will begin competition in 2020-21.

 Urbana Blue Knights Athletics will expand to 23 combined NCAA Division II varsity and club sports, which also includes the additions of acrobatics & tumbling, men's wrestling and men's volleyball in the past two years. UU will now feature 12 total women's varsity and club programs. The Blue Knights will compete among six women's lacrosse teams in the Mountain East Conference, where it finished sixth in 2015 and fifth in 2016. UU discontinued women's lacrosse in 2016 after going 10-73 in six seasons of NCAA DII competition.

 "I am excited to bring women's lacrosse back to Urbana University," Executive Vice President/CEO Dr. Christopher Washington said. "My enthusiasm is fueled by UU alumni who played lacrosse and went on to become intercollegiate coaches at other universities. I expect that women's lacrosse will attract scholar-athletes, promote healthy lifestyles, foster growth in leadership and teamwork skills, and encourage the pursuit of excellence that challenges them to reach their full potential."

Averett University (D3 VA) & Columbia College (NAIA MO) Add Lacrosse

DANVILLE, Va. — Through the support of an anonymous donor, Averett University is proud to announce the addition of three NCAA Division III varsity athletics programs — men's lacrosse, women's lacrosse and men's wrestling. All three are scheduled to begin play during the 2017-18 academic year. Averett is launching its 14th, 15th and 16th varsity programs, respectively, as part of the university's "Averett 2020" strategic plan to increase enrollment and expand the geographic diversity of its student population.

The three programs are expected to generate 90 new students within four years, which will assist Averett in its aspiration for 1,100 traditional students. "It is an exciting time at Averett University as we drive strategic growth centered on our students' success and their enhanced experience," said Dr. Tiffany M. Franks, President of Averett University.

"We are so very appreciative of this most generous gift that will help us achieve new levels of athletic and academic excellence. Adding these sports will help us to diversify our enrollment pipelines by attracting prospective students from geographical regions outside of Averett's traditionally targeted territories."

 Columbia, Mo. – Columbia College has elected to add two new sport programs to its lineup of teams beginning in the fall of 2017. The Cougars will be adding men's lacrosse and women's bowling. "We are excited about the expansion of athletic offerings at Columbia College," stated athletic director and head men's basketball coach Bob Burchard.  Lacrosse has steadily increased in popularity over the last few years and is currently in invitational status with the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and will most likely become a championship sport within the next couple years. 27 schools sponsor men's lacrosse in the NAIA.

Union College (NAIA KY) Adds Lacrosse

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Union College Director of Athletics Tim Curry announced Tuesday the addition of men's and women's lacrosse to the catalogue of Bulldog sports programs, bringing the total number of offerings to 26. Union will begin competing in men's lacrosse in the spring of 2017 with women's lacrosse taking the field in 2018. "We are excited about bringing to lacrosse to Union College," said Curry.

 "This is a sport we have been looking to add for some time now as it is one of, if not the fastest growing sports in college athletics right now." With Union competing in men's lacrosse in a little over a year, Curry also announced Ed Craver as the program's first head coach. ​"Ed brings a wealth of knowledge and experience, which will undoubtedly be beneficial to us as we build our lacrosse programs," said Curry. A search for a women's lacrosse coach will be held in the coming months to begin recruiting for the 2018 season.
