Warren Wilson College announced it will add lacrosse as a new varsity sport.
The college is beginning a nationwide search to hire coaches for both men's and women's lacrosse teams. The coaches will focus on recruiting full teams during this academic year and will begin to practice and compete in the 2020-2021 academic year.
"Adding lacrosse advances our vision of expanding athletic programming and increasing student athlete enrollment," said Joni Williamson, director of athletics and adventure sports at Warren Wilson College. "It's an exciting time for Warren Wilson athletics."
Warren Wilson's announcement comes as the college is in the process of joining the NCAA Division III membership. The NCAA has approved Warren Wilson's application for exploratory membership. The introduction of a new team sport will help satisfy membership requirements.

URBANA, Ohio – The Urbana University Department of Athletics announced it will add two sports with the revival of women's lacrosse and the addition of women's water polo. Both sports will begin competition in 2020-21.
Urbana Blue Knights Athletics will expand to 23 combined NCAA Division II varsity and club sports, which also includes the additions of acrobatics & tumbling, men's wrestling and men's volleyball in the past two years. UU will now feature 12 total women's varsity and club programs.
The Blue Knights will compete among six women's lacrosse teams in the Mountain East Conference, where it finished sixth in 2015 and fifth in 2016. UU discontinued women's lacrosse in 2016 after going 10-73 in six seasons of NCAA DII competition.
"I am excited to bring women's lacrosse back to Urbana University," Executive Vice President/CEO Dr. Christopher Washington said. "My enthusiasm is fueled by UU alumni who played lacrosse and went on to become intercollegiate coaches at other universities. I expect that women's lacrosse will attract scholar-athletes, promote healthy lifestyles, foster growth in leadership and teamwork skills, and encourage the pursuit of excellence that challenges them to reach their full potential."

SALEM, Ore. – Corban University Athletic Director Twiggs Reed announced on Monday that the Warriors would be adding two varsity programs, with men's and women's lacrosse officially joining the sporting slate in the fall of 2019 at Corban.
"This is an exciting time for Corban University and our athletic department," said Reed. "Lacrosse has been the fastest growing sport in America for the past 20 years, and it is a part of our strategic plan to increase student enrollment as well as to bring high-character, Christ-centered students to our campus. I'm excited for the future of Corban Athletics, and I'm thrilled with the addition of these two teams!"
The addition of these two programs bring Corban's total varsity teams to 16. It joins men's wrestling as one of three new varsity athletic programs that begin in the fall of 2019 at Corban.
"We are ecstatic about bringing men's and women's lacrosse to Corban," said Corban University President Sheldon Nord. "It provides a fantastic opportunity for Christian lacrosse players to come to a University where they can learn about how to make a difference in the world for Jesus Christ while getting to play the sport that they love, and that is something we believe is very exciting."

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University Director of Athletics Dr. John Planek announced on Thursday (August 9) that Joe Perruzzi has been hired as the first men's lacrosse coach in Flyer history.
"Our intercollegiate athletic program will welcome our 23rd sport offering with the addition of men's lacrosse starting competition in the 2019-2020 season," Planek said. "I am glad to announce that Joe Perruzzi will be our inaugural head coach. His successful experience at the Division II level along with his energy level will serve us well as we begin to establish our lacrosse program at Lewis University."
Lewis Senior Vice President for Enrollment Management, Marketing and Planning Ray Kennelly was equally as excited about the new Flyer sport addition. "The addition of men's lacrosse, will enhance student life on campus as well as provide additional opportunities for intercollegiate athletic competition," Kennelly said. "This will also help spread the Lewis name to new markets."

Oskaloosa--William Penn Athletics Director Nik Rule is excited to announce the addition of men's and women's lacrosse and men's volleyball to the list of intercollegiate sports the University offers.
All three sports will begin competition in the 2019-2020 school year. They are the first sports to be added since men's and women's bowling back in 2009-2010; WPU has added or reinstated seven programs since joining the NAIA in 2001-2002.
"We feel these three intercollegiate sports fit perfectly into our strategic plan for our University and the athletics department," Rule said. "They are quickly-emerging sports in the NAIA with several schools in our conference and our region sponsoring them. It is the perfect time to add them to our department and we have facilities that will immediately be able to accommodate each sport."

UPLAND, Ind. – Taylor University has announced plans to begin men's and women's varsity lacrosse programs, increasing the number of intercollegiate programs offered to student-athletes at TU to 20.
"We are excited about bringing men's and women's lacrosse from a club sport level to a varsity sport," stated Vice President for Student Development Skip Trudeau. "As clubs they have been a great addition to our campus and taking them to the varsity level is the next logical step."
The men's lacrosse program will continue as a club sport until it begins playing official varsity contests during the spring of 2019 and the women's lacrosse team will begin playing competitively the following season in 2020.

St. Ambrose University President Sister Joan Lescinski, CSJ, PhD, announced today the University will add men's and women's varsity swimming & diving and women's varsity lacrosse next academic year. The swimming teams will begin competition in the fall of 2017 and the women's lacrosse team will begin play in the spring of 2018.
Additionally, SAU Director of Athletics Ray Shovlain announced the hiring of Garrett Wimberly as the head men's and women's lacrosse coach at St. Ambrose. He will begin his duties on Sept. 1.
Since 2009-10, the University has added men's and women's bowling, men's lacrosse, athletic band, and now men's and women's swimming & diving, and women's lacrosse.

MARS HILL, N.C. – Athletic Director David Riggins and the Mars Hill University Athletics Department announce the addition of women's lacrosse for the 2017-18 season. Also announced is inaugural head coach, Kristina Llanes. Llanes will spend the 2016-17 season on the recruiting trail before placing MHU's first women's lacrosse team on the field in the spring of 2018.
Riggins stated, "Mars Hill University welcomes Coach Llanes to the Lion Athletic Family. We are so fortunate to land a head coach with such extensive head coaching experience. The fact that she has experience in developing a first year collegiate program is value added."

LYNDON CENTER, Vt. – The Lyndon Department of Athletics has announced it will add two athletic programs in the 2016-17 school year.
A men's and women's track and field program, as well as a women's lacrosse team will be added to the 12 v
arsity sports the institution currently offers and both will compete at the NCAA Division III level.
Lyndon has begun a nationwide search for qualified coaches who will be hired this summer to recruit for and organize the programs throughout the 2015-16 academic year. The Spring 2017 semester will mark the first season these teams complete as NCAA varsity programs.

Florida Becomes First State To Mandate Helmets In Girls HS Lacrosse

It’s official: helmets have been mandated in the state of Florida.
On June 10, the Florida High School Athletic Association ruled that all participating members of the FHSAA will have to wear helmets in 2015. These participating FHSAA programs will be the only teams in the nation state-mandated to wear this form of protective head gear.
“The board did vote on mandating a helmet for the 2015 season,” Alex Ozuna, an Assistant Director of Athletics and the lacrosse administrator for the Florida High School Athletic Association, confirmed Wednesday. “A board member brought up this recommendation to the board for an action item. It was discussed during the operations committee, and we had individuals from US Lacrosse present to kind of give the committee a background on where they currently are in the process of standardizing specifications for a soft helmet for the girl’s game.”
Ozuna continued: “The item was taken to the Board of Directors. The whole entire board reviewed and took into account what was said by the individuals from US Lacrosse and decided that because it is a major safety issue in our state — they took into account how long the process has been for US Lacrosse to get to this point — and moving forward that they wanted to go ahead and take the steps now instead of having to wait one, two, possibly three years for an actual product with the specific standardize specifications that US Lacrosse was going to implement.”

When you picked up the paper this morning you didn’t see a physics section. And so, whether it’s right or wrong, that’s the way our society is. We value sports, and so my responsibility, and the athletic department’s, is to take advantage of that social emphasis on athletics in ways that really expose Boston College to the country. So in our strategic planning process we are going to look at all programs and identify those that can be nationally competitive and nationally distinctive and figure out how we are going to resource those programs in ways that best serve the University.”

INDIANAPOLIS — Women’s rowing is one of three Division I sports whose championship brackets will expand in 2013. In August, the NCAA Executive Committee approved a budget that included a recommendation from the Division I Championships/Sport Management Cabinet to expand championships in the Football Championship Subdivision, women’s lacrosse and rowing.
The two women’s sports will expand their brackets in the spring of 2013, while the FCS bracket will expand in the fall of 2013. The FCS bracket will grow from 20 to 24 teams in 2013, while the women’s lacrosse bracket will increase from 16 to 26 teams and rowing moves from 16 to 22 teams in the spring.
Expansion in the two women’s sports is consistent with the Executive Committee’s charge to ensure that equitable opportunities exist in light of the bracket expansion for the FCS championship.
