Ohio Valley University (DII WV) Adds Women's Lacrosse

Vienna, W. Va.— (November 9, 2015) Ohio Valley University has added NCAA Division II Women's Lacrosse to its athletic program, OVU Athletic Director Chad Porter has announced. While recruiting is currently underway, the program will officially begin competition in the spring of 2017.

The recent addition of a women's lacrosse program on campus brings the total number of Fighting Scots women's varsity sports to seven, fourteen OVU varsity sports overall. Other women's varsity sports offered at OVU include basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball and volleyball. Former
OVU student-athlete Max Ruhl was named the head women's lacrosse coach this past summer.

"I'm excited about the addition of women's lacrosse and I am looking forward to Coach Ruhl building a successful program, both on and off the field," said Porter.

Concordia University - Chicago Adds Lacrosse

Oct. 28, 2014 – Concordia University Chicago will begin men's and women's lacrosse during the 2015-16 academic year. The announcement was made at the recent 2014 Athletics Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony.

"Concordia University Chicago is an ideal university for student-athletes to flourish in the classroom, in their sports and ultimately in life beyond college," said Dr. Daniel L. Gard, President of Concordia University Chicago. "The University looks forward to lacrosse becoming a part of our active and growing athletic program and to the presence of lacrosse players who will add much to our campus. Go, Cougars' Lacrosse!"

The addition of both lacrosse programs will increase the number of intercollegiate sports programs offered at CUC to 19. "We think that lacrosse is a growing sport that fits the profile of the students attending Concordia-Chicago," said Pete Gnan, Concordia-Chicago Director of Athletics. "By adding two additional athletic programs, it will enhance the opportunities that students have for intercollegiate competition at the university."

Coast Guard Academy (D3 CT) and Davis & Elkins College (D2 WV) Add Men's and Women's Lacrosse

The U.S. Coast Guard Academy Division of Athletics announced today that it will elevate the men’s and women’s club lacrosse teams to varsity status, effective with the 2014-15 academic year. The teams will compete officially for the first time as Division III intercollegiate squads playing in the NEWMAC Conference in the spring of 2015.

“This is a very significant stride for the CGA athletics program,” said Director of Athletics Tim Fitzpatrick. “It’s a great thing to be able to accommodate the interests and talents of so many cadets by bringing two very strong club programs to the varsity level. The popularity and growth of lacrosse both regionally and nationally in the recent past is very well documented. We look forward to the addition of the two lacrosse programs helping us attract more of our nation’s best and brightest student-athletes to the academy.”

On Friday, Davis & Elkins College will celebrate not only the groundbreaking for a state-of-the-art athletic field that will serve the community and its youth, but also the launch of a men's and women's lacrosse program.

Commenting on the addition of the sport to the College's roster of athletics, D&E President G.T. 'Buck' Smith said, "Since we are going to build an all-surface field, we should have a balance between seasonal sports. Additionally, as we move into the new conference, we want to have as many teams as possible competing."

With the start of the 2013-2014 sports season, D&E will compete in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) Division II which includes colleges from Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee and West Virginia. Several of those colleges have or are planning lacrosse programs, and dozens of other NCAA Division II colleges have lacrosse teams in place.

More on Michigan Going D1

11 years ago Michigan added Men's Soccer.  Now they are on the verge of a National Championship.  Will a Division 1 Men's Lacrosse team at Michigan be able to produce the same results in a decade?  Maybe quicker?  According to the Michigan Men's Soccer Coach Michigan approaches Non-Revenue sports differently than most big time athletic departments:

"A lot of people wanted to point the finger at gender equity. It's not gender equity, it's finances and it's decisions that athletic departments make on how they want to spend or not spend their money," Burns said. "There are a lot of programs that wish there were only two sports — football and spring football."

Recently Michigan A.D. Dave Brandon spoke with Inside Lacrosse about the potential transition.  Rumors are the official announcement could be as early as January:

Insidelacrosse.com -- The possibility of lacrosse becoming a varsity sport at the University of Michigan appears to be closer to becoming a reality. Michigan athletic director Dave Brandon, who spoke with IL Monday morning on the issue, has made unofficial comments regarding the potential of adding both a men's and women's lacrosse program, but did not officially comment as to when a decision will be made.

"We're highly interested in adding lacrosse as a varsity sport," Brandon said. "We're in the process of doing a review of how that would work and the costs associated and reaching out to donors to see what kind of support we have. We're in investigation mode. We very much would like to do it but we have to first prove it's a viable option."
