Bryant & Stratton College (NJCAA WI) Adds Men's Lacrosse

MILWAUKEE — Next year, Bryant & Stratton College (WI) will be beginning its lacrosse program and the program’s first head coach, BJ Bargas, will be leading the way. Bargas has plenty of experience when it comes to coaching lacrosse.

“I helped coach Sussex Hamilton this past spring, helping it to it's first playoff win in program history while also getting a layout of the land here in Wisconsin. I [also] coached at Buford High School this past season, which led to a state championship,” Bargas said. “Prior to that, I actually started a high school program at East Forsyth High School in 2021. Was there for a couple of seasons and worked with a group that had various backgrounds of experienced players and players that had never picked up a stick before. It really paved the way for me to understand how to start something from scratch.”

Before landing at East Forsyth, Bargas coached in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and played club ball for the University of New Mexico. With a new program set to begin, he already has a plethora of players ready to make the inaugural season a successful one.

UW - Superior (D3 WI) Adds Women's Lacrosse

 SUPERIOR, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Superior and Yellowjacket Athletics have announced the addition of three sports – one varsity sport and two club sports, to its current athletic offerings. UW-Superior will add one varsity NCAA sport, women's lacrosse, which will debut in time for the 2026-27 academic year with sights set on competing in the spring 2027 season.

Additionally, UW-Superior will add two club sports – men's ice hockey and men's soccer, which will begin play in the 2025-26 academic year. The additions bring the total varsity sports at UW-Superior to 20 (9 men's, 11 women's). The club men's hockey and soccer teams will be the first club sports brought under the umbrella of Yellowjacket Athletics.

 "We are thrilled to expand our offerings to provide more, and new, opportunities for student-athletes. Expanding these programs appeals to the interest we receive from prospective students and the growing participation of these sports within our region," UW-Superior director of athletics Nick Bursik said.

Lawrence University (D3 WI) Adds Lacrosse

APPLETON, Wis. -- Lawrence University announced the addition of two new athletics programs – women's and men's lacrosse. A national search for full-time head coaches is underway with the first season of competitive play scheduled for spring 2025. The addition of lacrosse follows the university's strategic plan to align Lawrence's athletics program with additional opportunities for student-athletes, according to Lawrence Director of Athletics Jason Imperati. Lawrence joins a growing list of NCAA Division III

institutions to offer lacrosse as an intercollegiate sport. More than 200 Division III schools around the nation sponsor intercollegiate lacrosse, including eight schools in Wisconsin. Men's lacrosse has 245 programs at the Division III level, and there are 288 women's teams competing in Division III. 

"The ever-growing popularity of lacrosse across the nation, particularly in the Midwest, extends opportunities for student-athletes who are looking to continue their playing careers while pursuing a quality degree at a leading liberal arts university," Imperati said. "While we have tremendous work ahead, we are excited for the future of both programs and what they will mean for the Lawrence experience and our greater community." "Bringing lacrosse to our university and region speaks to our commitment to our current and future student-athletes and we look forward to welcoming our coaches and these students to our campus," said Lawrence University President Laurie A. Carter. "I am proud of the hard work leading to the addition of these programs to our NCAA lineup of sports."

University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point (D3) Adds Women's Lacrosse

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – UW-Stevens Point athletics will expand to 25 varsity sports with the addition of men's volleyball and women's lacrosse. Additionally, Philippe Abiad has been named head men's volleyball coach as the program will begin competition in the 2023-24 academic year. 

"Women's lacrosse and men's volleyball are natural next steps in the growth Pointers Athletics," stated UWSP Director of Athletics Brad Duckworth. "Chancellor Gibson has outlined increasing enrollment and growth as a strategic imperative. These additions fit firmly into Chancellor Gibson's imperative. Pointer student-athletes strive for competitive excellence, academic rigor and exploration, and community service and impact. We are all thrilled to provide the Pointer experience to even more student athletes with these additional sports." Abiad comes to UWSP after serving as club director for Wisconsin Flight and was the club director for One Wisconsin Volleyball Club from 2018 to 2022. 

Prior to that, Abiad spent 18 seasons as an assistant coach for the women's volleyball program at Cleveland State University. There, he helped CSU win five Horizon League Tournament and five Horizon League regular season titles. Under his tutelage, Abiad coached seven All-Americans while at Cleveland State. The Vikings had 13 all-region selections and 19 first-team all-conference selections.

University of Rhode Island (D1) and Milwaukee School of Engineering (D3) Add Women's Lacrosse

KINGSTON, R.I. — December 2, 2021 — With the 50th anniversary of Title IX approaching, the Rhode Island Athletics Department has announced it will add women’s lacrosse as a varsity program. 

 Expected to begin competition in the Atlantic 10 during the 2024-25 season, women’s lacrosse will become the 19th varsity team and 11th women’s team at Rhode Island. It is the first varsity program to be added since women’s rowing in 1996, the year that sport became NCAA-affiliated.

The decision to add women’s lacrosse came after an internal feasibility study showed favorable economic impact along with Title IX Compliance stability for the University.

“The opportunity to provide more opportunities for our student-athletes is exciting and significant for the overall growth of the University,” Rhode Island Director of Athletics Thorr Bjorn said. “The Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 was a vital piece of law that has had a profound impact on our society. We are proud to honor the 50th anniversary of Title IX by growing women’s athletics at Rhode Island.”

MILWAUKEE – Thanks to a generous gift from Dr. Kathleen Ruehlow '72, MSOE Regent, MSOE is able to begin phase one of a multi-year plan to expand co-curricular offerings that include an expansion of arts programming and women's sports. In phase one, new offices for coaches and new women's locker rooms are being built in the Kern Center and Viets Field. This allows the Raiders athletics program to add five new women's teams to its roster: lacrosse, hockey, swim, golf, bowling, and to expand women's track and field offerings.

"We are very excited to be adding opportunities for female student athletes at MSOE. In addition to supporting the enrollment initiative, we are helping to grow the sports of women's lacrosse and women's hockey," said MSOE athletic director Brian Miller. "The University has also had a plethora of inquiries about a swim team. With many of our fellow engineering schools supporting swim very successfully, it was an easy decision to add to our offerings. The same goes for women's bowling as the sport is one of the quickest growing disciplines in D-III."

UW-Stout (D3 WI) Adds Women's Lacrosse

MENOMONIE (September 22, 2021) – The fastest growing collegiate sport will be coming to UW-Stout when the Blue Devils introduce women's lacrosse to the sports module. UW-Stout will immediately begin a national search for a coach to develop the program with the intent to begin competition in the spring of 2023. Lacrosse becomes the 19th NCAA varsity sport in the UW-Stout sports module and the 11th NCAA varsity sport for women. The lacrosse team will play their home games at Nelson Field. Esports, a non-NCAA sport, became a varsity program during the 2020-21 school year.

The fast-paced sport of lacrosse is growing collegiately not only nationwide - 26 NCAA schools added lacrosse in 2020 - but among schools in the area. UW-River Falls was the first conference school to play lacrosse, beginning in the 2018-19 school year. The Falcons earned an NCAA playoff bid this past spring. UW-La Crosse began their women's program in 2020 and UW-Eau Claire played their first games in 2021. In addition to the three WIAC schools, seven colleges and universities in Wisconsin offer Division III women's programs. Nearby Augsburg University, Hamline University and the University of Northwestern in St. Paul offer Division III women's lacrosse programs. With the start of the 2020-21 season, there were 293 NCAA Division III women's lacrosse programs.

University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire (D3) Adds Women's Lacrosse

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (blugolds.com) - The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire has announced the launch of a plan for investing in its future to ensure student success and bring talent to the region for years to come.

The expansion of UW-Eau Claire's athletics teams will include the reinstatement of men's baseball (which was discontinued in 1995) and the addition of women's lacrosse in the spring 2021 season, as well as the addition of men's soccer in the fall 2021 season.

Edgewood College (D3 WI) Adds Lacrosse

MADISON, Wis. – In what has already been an exciting summer for the Edgewood College Athletics Department, the Eagles added to that excitement with the addition of two more sports, announced Tuesday. Edgewood College will be adding both Men's and Women's Lacrosse to their varsity sports lineup, beginning during the 2020-21 academic year.

 "Edgewood College adding Lacrosse is going to be a lot of fun," said Eagles Director of Athletics Al Brisack. "Over the years, I've watched the sport grow in the Madison region. Now, we get to be a part of that growth. Youngstown State (D1 OH) and Wilson College (D3 PA) Add Women's Lacrosse

Youngstown State will add a men's swimming and diving program as well as a women's lacrosse team in the near future, Executive Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Ron Strollo announced on Monday. Men's swimming and diving will become the 20th Division I sport currently offered by the YSU Athletic Department when it begins competition this fall. YSU previously competed in men's swimming and diving from 1964 through 1984 and 1949-51. Women's lacrosse is scheduled to debut in the spring of 2021.

 "We're excited about this new opportunity to recruit high school students from Ohio, the region and internationally to pursue their academic and athletic goals at Youngstown State in both sports," Strollo said. "Our swimming facility is one of the best in the area and we look forward to showcasing it with both our men's and women's programs. The growth of women's lacrosse in Ohio and throughout the Midwest has seen an increased number of schools sponsor the sport and we are thrilled to add it at Youngstown State."

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. ─ Wilson College continues to expand its intercollegiate athletics program with the addition of women's lacrosse─the fastest-growing NCAA women's sport of the past 15 years. Women's lacrosse will become Wilson's 11th NCAA Division III program. In the last six years, the college has added six intercollegiate programs─most recently baseball, which will begin its inaugural season this spring with a home opener at Chambersburg's historic Henninger Field.

"Our sport sponsorship continues to expand and we are excited to add the growing sport of women's lacrosse to Phoenix Athletics," said Wilson Director of Athletics Lori Frey. "We look forward to yet another sport competing in the Colonial States Athletics Conference." Wilson's first lacrosse season will occur in the spring of 2021.

University of Wisconsin - La Crosse Adds Women's Lacrosse

La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Intercollegiate Athletics Department has announced the addition of women's lacrosse to its list of varsity teams starting in the fall of 2019. Women's lacrosse will become the 21st varsity sport and the 12th for women at UW-La Crosse. 

UW-La Crosse Director of Athletics Kim Blum has also announced the hiring of Cassandra Berger as the Eagles' head women's lacrosse coach. Women's lacrosse will start varsity competition in 2019-20 with games being played in spring. Home games will be played on the UW-La Crosse soccer field at Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex.

"Cassandra has great energy and a personality that will serve her well in starting a program," said Blum. "I've been very impressed with her initiative and work ethic." Berger earned four letters in lacrosse at the University of Dubuque (Iowa), serving as team captain her senior season. She earned Dubuque's (Iowa) Coaches Award and was named to the Midwest Lacrosse Conference All-Academic Team. Berger earned her bachelor's degree with a triple major in accounting, human resource management and business administration from Dubuque (Iowa) in 2016 and is currently pursuing her master's degree in business administration.

University of Pittsburgh Add Women's Lacrosse

PITTSBURGH—University of Pittsburgh Director of Athletics Heather Lyke announced today that Pitt Athletics will add women's lacrosse as a varsity sport. The program will play its inaugural season against NCAA Division I competition in the 2021-22 academic year. Pitt will be the ninth Atlantic Coast Conference institution to sponsor the sport at the NCAA Division I level.

The program will be fully funded with the NCAA maximum of 12 scholarships and play its games at the Petersen Sports Complex. "On behalf of our University and Department of Athletics, we are extremely excited to announce the addition of women's lacrosse as a Division I sport at Pitt," said Lyke, who in 2014 chaired the NCAA Men's Lacrosse Committee.
