University of Dayton Adds Women's Lacrosse

The University of Dayton will add women’s lacrosse as an intercollegiate sport and begin competition in spring of 2016. The addition of women’s lacrosse, the fastest-growing team sport in the U.S., according to the most recent research by Sports Marketing Surveys USA, gives Dayton 18 intercollegiate sports.

“Lacrosse is enjoying unprecedented growth,” University of Dayton Vice President and Director of Athletics Tim Wabler said. “We understand the popularity of the game from youth levels all the way to the pros. We are excited to add another avenue such as lacrosse to showcase our student-athletes at the University of Dayton.”

Detroit Free Press Reviews MSU's Lacrosse Past and Future

EAST LANSING — More than a decade later, the dismissal of two men’s sports programs at Michigan State still stings to those involved. Men’s lacrosse and men’s gymnastics were the last two sports programs cut at MSU — both deemed a necessity for the school to get compliant federal Title IX regulations. Lacrosse was cut following the 1996 season, while gymnastics followed in 2001.

“It very much so (still stings today),” said Kimball, who guided the Spartans to NCAA Lacrosse tournament appearances in 1987, 1989 and 1991. “I have the utmost respect for the people at Michigan State these days, and they weren’t really part of it. Back when it happened in 1997 it was not handled well. The players weren’t handled well, the situation was not handled well.
