University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire (D3) Adds Women's Lacrosse

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (blugolds.com) - The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire has announced the launch of a plan for investing in its future to ensure student success and bring talent to the region for years to come.

"We are in the midst of an exciting time for UW-Eau Claire," Chancellor James Schmidt said. "We are making strides toward improving success outcomes for our students. We're launching new in-demand academic programs and moving forward in important initiatives like our research collaboration with Mayo Clinic Health System and our public-private partnership for the new Sonnentag Event and Recreation Complex — all developments that will bring significant new opportunities for our students while serving the needs of the Chippewa Valley and our state. That's what this new investment plan is all about."

The expansion of UW-Eau Claire's athletics teams will include the reinstatement of men's baseball (which was discontinued in 1995) and the addition of women's lacrosse in the spring 2021 season, as well as the addition of men's soccer in the fall 2021 season.

Newbury College (D3 MA) Adds Men's Lacrosse

BROOKLINE, Mass. - Newbury College is pleased to announce that it will add men’s lacrosse to its athletics lineup in the New England Collegiate Conference, beginning with the spring 2019 season. The College recently approved adding the sport to its intercollegiate athletics program, which currently sponsors 16 intercollegiate sport programs; eight men’s teams and eight women’s teams.

According to CollegeCross.com, 27 institutions added a lacrosse program in 2017, including the addition of Newbury College’s women’s lacrosse team. Sixteen of the 27 started men’s lacrosse programs.

“Since we announced the addition of our women’s lacrosse program two years ago, we have experienced an increase in interest for men’s lacrosse on campus.” said Newbury College Director of Athletics Jonathan Harper. “I am pleased that Newbury continues to strengthen the Athletics program by adding a sport that is very popular in the Northeast, especially at the high school level.”

Allegheny College (D3 PA) Adds Men's Lacrosse

MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Allegheny College Board of Trustees has authorized the addition of field hockey and men's lacrosse to the school's varsity athletic offerings.

"We are very excited to add field hockey and men's lacrosse to Allegheny's athletic program," stated Allegheny College President Dr. James H. Mullen, Jr. "These two sports will afford opportunities for excellent student-athletes from across the country to be part of a nationally-recognized academic community, and contribute to a proud athletic tradition that extends back to the founding of the NCAA."

Field hockey will begin play in the fall of 2019, while the inaugural season of Gator men's lacrosse will be spring of 2020. The search for a head coach for each program will begin immediately. "Men's lacrosse and field hockey have been on our radar for several years," said Portia Hoeg, Allegheny Director of Athletics and Recreation. "However, we did not have the proper resources in place to create a solid foundation for additional sports."

Wofford College (D1 SC) Adds Women's Lacrosse

Wofford College director of athletics Richard Johnson announced on Thursday that the school will introduce women's lacrosse as a varsity sport beginning in the 2017-18 school year. "Wofford College is excited to be bringing women's lacrosse to campus," said Johnson.

"Our goal is to hire a head coach in the next couple of months to begin the recruiting process necessary to field teams by the 2018 spring season."

Women's lacrosse is played in the spring and games are expected to be played at Gibbs Stadium, while locker room facilities will be in the Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium. The first incoming class of recruits will enroll in the fall of 2016, with the second recruiting class entering in the fall of 2017. The first season of NCAA competition will be in the spring of 2018.

"It's very exciting for Wofford College to field a women's team in lacrosse, arguably the fastest-growing sport in the NCAA," Wofford President Nayef H. Samhat said. "We know we will see more and more of our Terrier fans enjoying this exhilarating and fast-paced sport, and we can't wait to see the team compete on a national level."

Gulf South Conference (DII) Adds Women's Lacrosse

Birmingham, AL—The increasing popularity of women's lacrosse has expanded into the Gulf South Conference, as the league officially announced that it will be adding the sport to its sponsorship list for 2015-16. The GSC Presidents agreed to move forward with the addition of women's lacrosse at its annual business meeting this past June and the addition was made official when the University of Montevallo and Young Harris College signed on as affiliate members last week.

"Women's lacrosse has consistently been one of the fastest growing sports in the NCAA for a number of years and we are excited to provide championship and award opportunities for these student-athletes in the Gulf South Conference," GSC Commissioner Matt Wilson said. "Our Board of Directors believes this is a sport that makes sense for the GSC and I anticipate seeing more regional Division II programs in the next four or five years."

North Central University (D3 MN) Adds Men's Lacrosse

MINNEAPOLIS- North Central University is pleased to announce the addition of men’s lacrosse to its varsity sports offerings. The Rams lacrosse program, scheduled to begin competition in the spring of 2017, will be the first NCAA Division III varsity men’s lacrosse program in Minnesota. North Central and the city of Minneapolis partnered together to build a new turf athletics surface in Elliot Park, the city recreation center that is surrounded by the NCU campus, in the spring of 2015. The unique partnership with the city gives the Rams men’s & women’s soccer programs a new on-campus home while also allowing North Central an opportunity to pioneer a new program in one of America’s fastest growing sports.

“With the popularity of men’s lacrosse coming to the Midwest over recent years, the time has come to offer North Central students – present and future -- and our campus community the opportunity to participate and support the sport at a varsity level,” said Greg Johnson, Athletic Director. “I look forward to further uniting our university and the Minneapolis area through men’s lacrosse.”
