CLEVELAND (Monday, March 30, 2015) – Cleveland State University has announced that it will establish a varsity men's lacrosse program and begin recruiting athletes to compete in the spring season of the 2016-2017 academic year.
The addition comes as a result of a program prioritization process headed by CSU Athletics Director John Parry that explored factors including funding, competitiveness and national trends. Lacrosse is the fastest growing sport in the U.S. among high school athletes, and the CSU team will be the second NCAA Division I program in Ohio, joining Ohio State University.
"The addition of lacrosse brings to CSU a spectator sport that will build on the activities and excitement happening across the campus. We anticipate that students and the community will be attracted to Krenzler Field for a unique opportunity to see high-level
competition," Parry said.
The prioritization process mirrors efforts across the university to best align resources with programs and activities that display strong growth potential. The review resulted in the determination that university funding for men's wrestling would be discontinued following the conclusion of the 2015-2016 season. The university will explore external funding sources that if secured, could allow continuation of the program.

Purchase College (DIII NY) Adds Lacrosse

Purchase, NY (May 7, 2014) – The Purchase College athletic department is proud to announce that we will be offering men's lacrosse as an official NCAA Division III intercollegiate sport for 2015-16, said Athletic Director Chris Bisignano today.
The addition of men's lacrosse will boost the ever-growing department to 17 varsity sports in two years and it also complements the recently added women's lacrosse team, which just completed its second full season – one that was filled with several highlights, most notably the program's first victory, its first conference win and two all-conference distinctions for the team's top two players.
Adding men's lacrosse to a program that now includes women's lacrosse will not only enable Purchase to recruit quality student-athletes from the region and nationally, but it will also allow the department to continue to build on its recent success, Bisignano said.
At the heart of that expected success will be the program's new leadership. A national search for the first-ever head coach for the new varsity program will begin immediately.

Is Lacrosse on the Cusp of a Division I Sponsorship Explosion?

John Paul huddled with his players after they had just defeated Michigan State in last year's club lacrosse regular-season finale. Paul, a University of Michigan alum and former athletics administrator who over 14 years built arguably the most successful club lacrosse program in the nation, had an announcement to make. The Wolverines were making the jump to Division I, beginning with the 2012 season.
Shocked silence.
Fast-forward 12 months, and the shock lingers. The team, which lost one game in 59 while capturing three consecutive club lacrosse national championships between 2008 and 2010, tasted victory only once this season, but its Division I presence has nonetheless sent reverberations throughout collegiate lacrosse. No BCS school had launched a varsity men's lacrosse program since Notre Dame did so in 1981. "A lot of people are calling us the biggest story in the game in 30 years," Paul says, "which is nice of them to put a little bit more pressure on our backs."
