University of Indianapolis (DII) and Wilkes University (PA DIII) Add Lacrosse

INDIANAPOLIS – The University of Indianapolis made official its addition of men's and women's lacrosse, announcing the hiring of two head coaches Wednesday. Newlyweds Greg Stocks and Jillian Howley, both former head coaches at Division II Lake Erie, will each step in as their respective gender's very first UIndy lacrosse head coach. Married just a few weeks ago, the duo comes to Central Indiana from Lake Erie College in Painesville, Ohio – a suburb of Cleveland. Both will have a year to recruit and build a staff before starting NCAA Division II competition in the spring of 2016.

 "We are extremely excited to welcome Jillian and Greg as our head lacrosse coaches not only because of their successful coaching backgrounds, but also because they are a great fit for the University of Indianapolis," said Dr. Sue Willey, UIndy Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics. "Their passion for their sport, team-player attitude and desire to establish a positive experience for our student-athletes makes them a perfect fit for UIndy.

WILKES-BARRE – Wilkes University is proud to announce its plans to add men's lacrosse to its list of intercollegiate sport offerings. The expansion will increase the number of intercollegiate teams at Wilkes to 20 with ten men's sports: baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, lacrosse, soccer, swimming, tennis, and wrestling; and ten women's sports: basketball, cross country, field hockey, golf, lacrosse, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, and volleyball.

 Wilkes will begin to search for its new men's lacrosse head coach immediately with the program set to begin play during the 2015-16 academic year. "We believe adding a men's lacrosse team enhances the student experience and allows student athletes the option of enrolling in one of Wilkes' excellent academic programs and competing at the collegiate level in the sport they enjoy," said Paul Adams, Vice President, Affairs.

Rockhurst University (DII MO) Adds Lacrosse

Rockhurst University will be adding three new intercollegiate athletic programs in the fall of 2013. Men's and women's lacrosse, along with women's cross country, will increase Rockhurst’s athletic programs from 11 to 14 next year. Gary Burns, RU's Director of Athletics, said that the addition of these three programs will enhance athletic opportunities for an additional 55 new students in the first year. By the third year, that number could grow to 75 students.

"Lacrosse is the fastest growing team sport in America," Burns said. "This is an opportunity for Rockhurst to capitalize on an underserved market. We will be the first university or college in this area to field a lacrosse program. We will target the Greater Kansas City area and high schools on the East Coast for lacrosse players." There are currently 68 Division II women’s lacrosse programs and 46 Division II men's lacrosse programs organized into six conferences, as well as a number of independent programs consisting of mainly new programs. The Hawks will attempt to schedule lacrosse games with schools in Colorado and the St. Louis area. Rockhurst will be the 14th school in the Great Lakes Valley Conference to sponsor women's cross country.

Rhodes College (DIII TN) Adds Women's Lacrosse

Rhodes College is proud to announce it will add women’s varsity lacrosse to its Lynx roster beginning the 2013-14 season. The college has sponsored men’s varsity lacrosse since 2011.

“Many thanks to President Troutt and the president’s staff for their decision to add women’s lacrosse,” says Mike Clary, director of athletics at Rhodes. “Women’s lacrosse will provide more opportunities for Rhodes students, specifically women, to have a great experience in a varsity sport.”

Centenary College Adds Men's Lacrosse

SHREVEPORT - Men's Lacrosse at Centenary will become an intercollegiate sport starting in the 2012-13 academic year. The already successful program has operated as a club sport since 2010, achieving wins against established teams such as Tulane, Millsaps, University of Dallas, and University of Texas at San Antonio.

"We are extremely excited to add men's lacrosse and continue to see the positive impact the sport has on Centenary College," said Athletic Director William Broussard. "Our goal is to field a nationally ranked program, and I'm confident that Centenary will attract the scholar-athletes who will get us there. Lacrosse is a fantastic fit for us and allows us to grow Centenary's brand both within and outside our immediate geographic footprint."

Newberry College (SC) Adds Women's Lacrosse

NEWBERRY, S.C. - Newberry College leadership announced the addition of women's lacrosse as the College's 17th intercollegiate varsity sports program today. Emily Bikowski will serve as the program's first head coach as the program will begin immediately with the intention of the Wolves taking to the field for the 2012 season, which is played in the spring semester.

The addition of women's lacrosse is the first new sport added to the intercollegiate athletics program since the wrestling program was announced in 2004.

"Women's lacrosse is a very exciting sport and one which we're pleased to provide as a new opportunity for student-athletes to participate in," said senior vice president for institutional advancement and intercollegiate athletics Brad Edwards. "Women's lacrosse will bring another exciting, fan-friendly atmosphere to Setzler Field and we look forward to the community and our great supporters joining us there for the 2012 season."

Michigan's Tell Tale Heart

It's been thumping just beneath the floorboards of the Michigan athletic department for nearly a year now. It's a rhythmic cadence that must have Wolverine men's lacrosse coaches, players, fans and boosters holding their hands over their ears trying to silence the pounding.

Var-si-ty. Var-si-ty. Var-si-ty.

We've reached the point where if and when the university announces the move to the NCAA Division I ranks, it will be the most anti-climactic news in the history of the sport.

The concept of Michigan ditching its MCLA roots to go varsity has been around for years. It was all the way back in November 2007 when Wolverine coach John Paul planted the seed for the move.

"Whether it's three years from now or 15 years from now, Division I lacrosse at Michigan is inevitable," Paul told a reporter from The Michigan Daily. "The way the sport continues to grow, and all of the selling points that we have for it, it's going to happen."

University of New Orleans Considering Adding Men's Lacrosse

The University of New Orleans was hit hard by Hurricane Katrina, and five years later they are still recovering.  One reality of UNO's post Katrina existence is the decision by university administration to reclassify from Division I to Division III.  One silver lining however, is that a move to Division III will allow the university to add more sport offerings, including possibly even lacrosse: 

"As UNO looks to the future, leadership plans to add more sports.

Champion said softball “will probably come along” in 2012. UNO also is investigating other programs such as men’s lacrosse, men’s soccer and men’s and women’s cross country and track.
Champion said the school has received a lot of interest from prospective coaches. She said her office has fielded unsolicited e-mails and phone calls from area club and high school coaches who have expressed interest in being apart of UNO’s growth."
