Denver's lacrosse championship means more for the sport than just another trophy
Monday, May 25, 2015
Lacrosse is traditionally known as an East Coast sport, one played in prep schools in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic and in colleges mostly up and down the East Coast. But in recent years, it’s become a sport that’s quickly spreading, starting with Northwestern women’s team taking the first championship away from the traditional powerhouses a decade ago. And now, for the first time in NCAA history, a school west of the Appalachians took home the men’s title with Denver’s decisive victory over the Terps (whose women took home the title last weekend.)'

Detroit Free Press Reviews MSU's Lacrosse Past and Future
Tuesday, July 16, 2013
EAST LANSING — More than a decade later, the dismissal of two men’s sports programs at Michigan State still stings to those involved.
Men’s lacrosse and men’s gymnastics were the last two sports programs cut at MSU — both deemed a necessity for the school to get compliant federal Title IX regulations. Lacrosse was cut following the 1996 season, while gymnastics followed in 2001.
“It very much so (still stings today),” said Kimball, who guided the Spartans to NCAA Lacrosse tournament appearances in 1987, 1989 and 1991. “I have the utmost respect for the people at Michigan State these days, and they weren’t really part of it. Back when it happened in 1997 it was not handled well. The players weren’t handled well, the situation was not handled well.

Big 10 To Sponsor Lacrosse, Hopkins Joins as Affiliate Member
Monday, June 03, 2013
Park Ridge, Ill. - The Big Ten Conference announced today that men's and women's lacrosse will become the conference's 27th and 28th official sports and that Johns Hopkins University has been accepted as a sport affiliate member for men's lacrosse only beginning with the 2014-15 academic year.
"We are excited to announce the launch of Big Ten men's and women's lacrosse and the addition of Johns Hopkins as a sport affiliate member," said Big Ten Commissioner James E. Delany. "Johns Hopkins is an outstanding institution with a legacy of success in men's lacrosse that is simply unmatched in intercollegiate athletics. Lacrosse is an emerging sport among our current schools and is a long-held passion among our East Coast institutions. With the addition of Maryland and Rutgers in all sports and Johns Hopkins for men's lacrosse, we will have the requisite number of institutions to make men's and women's lacrosse official conference sports, building upon our tradition of broad-based sports competition. We look forward to the start of the first Big Ten men's and women's lacrosse seasons in 2015."

Augsburg College (DIII MN) Adds Women's Lacrosse
Monday, June 04, 2012
MINNEAPOLIS -- Augsburg College is continuing its tradition of being a pioneer in women's athletics by creating a varsity women's lacrosse team, to begin play in the 2013-14 school year.
Augsburg will be the first college or university in Minnesota to sponsor a varsity women's lacrosse program. Augsburg continues to lead the field in adding athletic opportunities for women; in 1995, Augsburg was the first college or university in the Midwest to sponsor a varsity women's ice hockey team.
“I am proud that Augsburg is once again willing to be the leader in bringing a varsity women's program to Minnesota,” said Augsburg Athletic Director Jeff Swenson. “As we were pioneers in 1995 when we were the first Midwestern school to have a varsity women's hockey program, we continue to be committed to be a strong leader for women's athletics.”

Championship Attendance Down, NCAA Ponders Change
Tuesday, May 29, 2012
Among the potential changes that Jarnecke said have been discussed, the most dramatic may be moving the Final Four a week later into June and playing the Quarterfinals on Memorial Day weekend. He said the idea of stretching out the weekend so the NCAA DI Final is a week later than the Semifinals hasn’t been addressed; in the early-June championship weekend scenario, he predicted it would be the same format as the current event.
Adding a week to the season does have some bigger hurdles, however, since that would keep students on campus longer after classes are over and there are costs associated with that. But removing some of the “opportunity costs” of playing on a holiday weekend might benefit the championship event, he said.
“If there’s a model and it makes sense, it’s something we’ll consider,” he said. “So we will explore that, but that part may be harder to come by than the other pieces.”

Presbyterian To Drop Men's Lacrosse
Tuesday, March 08, 2011

While no one would want to admit it lacrosse fans can't be too surprised that Presbyterian College has decided they will drop their Men's Lacrosse program. Presby lacrosse has always been in a tough situation. In 2006, shortly after the then Division II school began varsity Men's Lacrosse, the university announced it would transition to Division I. Presbyterian's administration obviously had ambitious dreams for their athletic department and transitioning to Division I they felt was an important next step. But what to do with that new Men's Lacrosse program? Men's Lacrosse was probably a great idea when they were a Division II tuition based athletic department, but where did the sport fit in the Division I revenue based model? Well it didn't and especially not in Clinton, SC. However, one would assume the predicament that PC faced at the time was how do you consider cutting a sport you just added? That would look really bad. So PC moved forward elevating Men's Lacrosse with all of their other sports figuring they'd give this Division I lacrosse thing a shot. Well it didn't work out too well. With no conference, little university support, and only the occasional win here and there, Presby found little success in the world of Division 1 Men's Lacrosse. Ironically, this past fall the NCAA failed to approve PC's Division I transition report, so all their sports will have to wait at least one more year for post season eligibility. Highlighted in the report are gender equity problems the NCAA took issue with, a possible catalyst for the reason Men's Lacrosse was dropped.

While no one wants to see a Men's Lacrosse program dropped anywhere, in the big picture where this hurts is the damage it does to any emerging potential for a southern lacrosse conference. With Mercer and High Point recently moving to Division I the talk of a southern conference had heated up. But with the loss of Presbyterian that dream could be all but dead until another Division 1 southern school steps up to the plate. Given the potential for a conference to open up the doors for the sport to the south, it is disappointing that Presbyterian used the lack of Men's Lacrosse sponsorship by the Big South Conference as a reason for discontinuing, rather than seeing the big picture and potential for the sport in the future.

Rattlers Return: Machine Move to Rochester
Tuesday, November 23, 2010
The Rattlers were a charter member of Major League Lacrosse (MLL) beginning play in 2001. In eight seasons in Rochester, the Rattlers compiled a 55-45 record capturing the National Division championship in 2004. The club’s greatest triumph came in 2008 when it won the MLL Championship, posting a 9-3 record en route to winning the Steinfeld Cup with a 16-6 win over the Denver Outlaws.
“The MLL is very excited to be returning to Rochester” said MLL Commissioner David Gross. The Rattlers had some of the most passionate and dedicated fans in the league and we’re thrilled that they will have the opportunity to enjoy MLL action again. We had the opportunity to work with Rob Clark and his staff this past summer and believe that Rob and his crew will do an excellent job growing the fan base in the region and running a first class operation.”
In addition, the club announced that B. J. O’Hara would be returning to lead the team as head coach. “B.J. O’Hara’s resume made him the obvious choice to lead the Rattlers” said RocLax LLC Owner and CEO Robert Clark. “B.J. was a huge part of the success the Rattlers realized over the years, culminating with a championship in 2008. We feel very fortunate to have B.J.”

Another Championship Weekend In the Books
Tuesday, June 01, 2010
If someone told you in March that this years NCAA Championship game would be between a Big East school and an ACC school you'd likely guess Syracuse vs. Virginia. However, that wasn't the case, with Duke facing off against Notre Dame to see who would get their first title. In the end Duke was victorious in a low scoring (in fact the lowest scoring ever) overtime affair. Given that the final two schools were two BCS universities with national brand names, the game likely drew more national interest than usual. However, some felt the defensive focused game was a boring experience and not the game lacrosse fans wanted played out on a national stage. Others also complained about the later start times, as ESPN appears to be slowly pushing the game towards prime time. And although Baltimore fans promised to deliver, the attendance figures were in line with last years finals weekend in Massachusetts.
