US Lacrosse Releases Annual Participation Survey

National lacrosse participation continued its upward trend in 2016 with the total number of participants on organized teams climbing past 825,000, according to an annual report produced by US Lacrosse. Overall, participation grew 3 percent to 826,023, and it was the 12th consecutive year that the net increase in players was at least 20,000.
The number of youth players topped 450,000 for the first time ever, and lacrosse continues to be the fastest-growing team sport at the high school and collegiate levels. Over the last five years, the number of schools sponsoring lacrosse at the high school level has risen 27 percent, and the number of NCAA schools sponsoring lacrosse has grown 33 percent.

Embry-Riddle University (DII Florida) Adds Lacrosse

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Embry-Riddle Director of Athletics John Phillips, has announced that Embry-Riddle will add men's and women's lacrosse to its intercollegiate athletics program. The Eagles will begin intercollegiate competition in lacrosse in 2017-18, which is projected to be ERAU's first season of full NCAA II membership.
"I'm really excited to announce the addition of these two new sports to our athletic program as part of our transition to NCAA Division II and the Sunshine State Conference," Phillips said. "Lacrosse is a fast-paced, fan-friendly sport that I know will be a great addition to our athletic program here on the Daytona Beach campus. It is one of the fastest growing sports in the nation and we look forward to being part of that excitement and growth."
The search for the programs' first head coaches will get underway in the next few weeks. The candidates will begin work this summer and then have a full academic year to recruit in preparation for the Eagles' first intercollegiate lacrosse games in the spring of 2018.

MINNEAPOLIS- North Central University is pleased to announce the addition of men’s lacrosse to its varsity sports offerings. The Rams lacrosse program, scheduled to begin competition in the spring of 2017, will be the first NCAA Division III varsity men’s lacrosse program in Minnesota.
North Central and the city of Minneapolis partnered together to build a new turf athletics surface in Elliot Park, the city recreation center that is surrounded by the NCU campus, in the spring of 2015. The unique partnership with the city gives the Rams men’s & women’s soccer programs a new on-campus home while also allowing North Central an opportunity to pioneer a new program in one of America’s fastest growing sports.
“With the popularity of men’s lacrosse coming to the Midwest over recent years, the time has come to offer North Central students – present and future -- and our campus community the opportunity to participate and support the sport at a varsity level,” said Greg Johnson, Athletic Director. “I look forward to further uniting our university and the Minneapolis area through men’s lacrosse.”

Most DeKalb County kids would say no.
Bert Miller, who runs Decatur Army Youth Athletics, is hoping to change that so kids know the lingo of a sport most probably have never watched or played.
“Lacrosse is continuing to grow and as it remains an up-and-coming sport with youths across the country, I would like to get South DeKalb youths involved because it’s an untapped resource at this point,”
said Miller, who hopes to begin offering free lacrosse clinics for elementary students by mid-September.
“I believe we only have two high school teams in South DeKalb because a lot of the kids don’t even see the sport until high school. That has to change.

Men's Lacrosse: High Point Names Jon Torpey First Men's Lacrosse Coach
HIGH POINT, N.C. – High Point University's first head coach of men's lacrosse will be Jon Torpey, Athletic Director Craig Keilitz announced on Wednesday. Torpey will join the Panthers in June 2011 after successful stints as associate head coach at both Dartmouth and Denver.

Denver Head Coach Bill Tierney got his most important W since becoming a Pioneer. DU shellacked Loyola at Inveso Field, home of the Denver Broncos, and will be the ECAC AQ to the National Tournament. This victory comes on the heels of a New York Times article and an ESPN article covering his decision to leave Princeton for Denver.
