Urbana University (D2 OH) Adds Women's Lacrosse

URBANA, Ohio – The Urbana University Department of Athletics announced it will add two sports with the revival of women's lacrosse and the addition of women's water polo. Both sports will begin competition in 2020-21.

Urbana Blue Knights Athletics will expand to 23 combined NCAA Division II varsity and club sports, which also includes the additions of acrobatics & tumbling, men's wrestling and men's volleyball in the past two years. UU will now feature 12 total women's varsity and club programs. The Blue Knights will compete among six women's lacrosse teams in the Mountain East Conference, where it finished sixth in 2015 and fifth in 2016. UU discontinued women's lacrosse in 2016 after going 10-73 in six seasons of NCAA DII competition.

"I am excited to bring women's lacrosse back to Urbana University," Executive Vice President/CEO Dr. Christopher Washington said. "My enthusiasm is fueled by UU alumni who played lacrosse and went on to become intercollegiate coaches at other universities. I expect that women's lacrosse will attract scholar-athletes, promote healthy lifestyles, foster growth in leadership and teamwork skills, and encourage the pursuit of excellence that challenges them to reach their full potential."

Minnesota AD Comments on D1 Lacrosse

The Gophers are getting closer to unveiling their vision for a major overhaul to their facilities for football, basketball and other sports.

Athletics director Norwood Teague said Thursday that the department's strategic facilities plan should be completed by mid-April. After that, department officials will begin a statewide tour to drum up fundraising. The eventual cost, Teague said, could be anywhere from $80 million to $125 million, but with some of the most outmoded facilities in the Big Ten, the university is trying to close the gap.

On potentially adding or cutting from the list of 25 Gophers sports teams: "There could be a time that could change, but I think it would be more of an addition than subtraction. ... [Adding lacrosse] is mentioned all the time. We'll look at it, but it doesn't mean it will happen any time soon."

Boston College A.D. Answers Question About Varsity Status

From the Heights Sports Blog

”We’re in the process of identifying how we resource our programs. If you think about this, athletics is, in so many ways, a marketing vehicle for the entire University. When you picked up the paper this morning you didn’t see a physics section. And so, whether it’s right or wrong, that’s the way our society is. We value sports, and so my responsibility, and the athletic department’s, is to take advantage of that social emphasis on athletics in ways that really expose Boston College to the country. So in our strategic planning process we are going to look at all programs and identify those that can be nationally competitive and nationally distinctive and figure out how we are going to resource those programs in ways that best serve the University.” -BC Athletic director Brad Bates, when asked about bringing back Men's Lacrosse

Women's D1 Lacrosse Postseason Tournament to Expand to 26 Teams

INDIANAPOLIS — Women’s rowing is one of three Division I sports whose championship brackets will expand in 2013. In August, the NCAA Executive Committee approved a budget that included a recommendation from the Division I Championships/Sport Management Cabinet to expand championships in the Football Championship Subdivision, women’s lacrosse and rowing.

The two women’s sports will expand their brackets in the spring of 2013, while the FCS bracket will expand in the fall of 2013. The FCS bracket will grow from 20 to 24 teams in 2013, while the women’s lacrosse bracket will increase from 16 to 26 teams and rowing moves from 16 to 22 teams in the spring.

Expansion in the two women’s sports is consistent with the Executive Committee’s charge to ensure that equitable opportunities exist in light of the bracket expansion for the FCS championship.

Is Lacrosse on the Cusp of a Division I Sponsorship Explosion?

John Paul huddled with his players after they had just defeated Michigan State in last year's club lacrosse regular-season finale. Paul, a University of Michigan alum and former athletics administrator who over 14 years built arguably the most successful club lacrosse program in the nation, had an announcement to make. The Wolverines were making the jump to Division I, beginning with the 2012 season.

Shocked silence.

Fast-forward 12 months, and the shock lingers. The team, which lost one game in 59 while capturing three consecutive club lacrosse national championships between 2008 and 2010, tasted victory only once this season, but its Division I presence has nonetheless sent reverberations throughout collegiate lacrosse. No BCS school had launched a varsity men's lacrosse program since Notre Dame did so in 1981. "A lot of people are calling us the biggest story in the game in 30 years," Paul says, "which is nice of them to put a little bit more pressure on our backs."

Beloit College (WI) Adding Men's Lacrosse, Hires Coach

Beloit, WI – Following a national search, Bob Dignazio has been named the first Head Coach of Men’s Lacrosse at Beloit College. The announcement was made by Director of Athletics and Recreation Peggy Carl.

"We have made history with Bob's hire as he becomes Beloit College's first ever Men's Lacrosse Head Coach and we could not be more thrilled that he has chosen to join us,” said Carl. "Bob knows what it takes to build a successful Lacrosse program and he will bring that knowledge with him as he builds Beloit's team from the ground up."

Dignazio comes to Beloit from Kenyon College in Ohio, where he served as the Lords’ Defensive and Recruiting Coordinator during the 2010 and 2011 seasons. He also served one season as the Defensive Coordinator at Randolph-Macon College after graduating from Kenyon in 2008.

Saturday Night Lights and an Olympic Timeline

Television coverage is huge for lacrosse.  Prime time live television coverage in front of a sold out crowd...that's about as good as it gets, and that is what we can expect Saturday night on ESPNU when Syracuse travels to Homewood field to face Johns Hopkins at 8pm.  So far the Cuse-UVA game has been the class of the televised schedule, we'll see if Cuse-Hopkins can live up to the hype Saturday.

NLL Insider has a very interesting article on lacrosse and it's potential to be an olympic sport.  When you break it all down, Tom Hayes who oversees development for the Federation of International Lacrosse predicts that the year 2024 is a likely goal for lacrosse to be an Olympic sport.
