TEMPE, Ariz. – Through generous donations and a grant from USA Triathlon, Sun Devil Athletics officially announces the addition of NCAA women’s triathlon and NCAA women’s lacrosse as Arizona State’s 24th and 25th varsity sports, respectively. The first seasons of triathlon and lacrosse are scheduled for the 2017-18 academic year.
“To announce today that we are expanding competitive and educational opportunities for future Sun Devil student-athletes is extraordinarily gratifying. It is an honor for ASU to be able to empower, embolden, serve and provide opportunities for these young people. The addition of triathlon, lacrosse and even hockey, embodies the purpose for us as administrators and advocates for our student-athletes.”

Florida Becomes First State To Mandate Helmets In Girls HS Lacrosse

It’s official: helmets have been mandated in the state of Florida.
On June 10, the Florida High School Athletic Association ruled that all participating members of the FHSAA will have to wear helmets in 2015. These participating FHSAA programs will be the only teams in the nation state-mandated to wear this form of protective head gear.
“The board did vote on mandating a helmet for the 2015 season,” Alex Ozuna, an Assistant Director of Athletics and the lacrosse administrator for the Florida High School Athletic Association, confirmed Wednesday. “A board member brought up this recommendation to the board for an action item. It was discussed during the operations committee, and we had individuals from US Lacrosse present to kind of give the committee a background on where they currently are in the process of standardizing specifications for a soft helmet for the girl’s game.”
Ozuna continued: “The item was taken to the Board of Directors. The whole entire board reviewed and took into account what was said by the individuals from US Lacrosse and decided that because it is a major safety issue in our state — they took into account how long the process has been for US Lacrosse to get to this point — and moving forward that they wanted to go ahead and take the steps now instead of having to wait one, two, possibly three years for an actual product with the specific standardize specifications that US Lacrosse was going to implement.”

SHAWNEE – St. Gregory's University will add three varsity sports for the start of the 2014-2015 academic year, athletics director Jeff Potter announced Wednesday. Men's and women's swimming and diving in addition to men's lacrosse will bring SGU's total offering of athletics programs to 17.
Potter said the university has already begun a search to fill the staffing needs of all three sports.
"Swimming and diving is an underserved sport in our region, and lacrosse has been identified as one of the most rapidly growing games in the United States," said SGU President Greg Main. "We are excited to be adding these programs and look forward to providing SGU's quality educational experience to future students who may be interested in them."
RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Felician College is adding three varsity intercollegiate sports to its athletics program, college officials announced today. New for the 2014-15 academic year will be women’s outdoor track & field, women’s bowling and women’s lacrosse.
“We are adding these three sports for the continued growth of our athletic department,” said Ben DiNallo, Felician College Athletic Director. “We’ve identified these particular sports as those that are continually growing in popularity among women athletes. Also, two of the three – lacrosse and outdoor track – are currently conference championship sports so we will have immediate post-season opportunities because of our membership in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference.”

Montreat College (NAIA NC) Adds Lacrosse

MONTREAT, N.C. -- Montreat College is set to expand its athletic department with the addition of men's and women's lacrosse while reinstating men's and women's tennis and adding women's reserve soccer beginning fall 2014 Athletic Director Craig Jackson announced on Tuesday.
With the launch of the new programs and by reviving the tennis program, the number of Cavalier student-athletes will rise to over 325 at Montreat College.
"The addition of these sports is great news for Cavalier Athletics," said Athletic Director Craig Jackson. "We look forward to the addition of these programs and their ability to aid in attracting quality student-athletes who wish to continue their athletic careers at the collegiate level."

The U.S. Coast Guard Academy Division of Athletics announced today that it will elevate the men’s and women’s club lacrosse teams to varsity status, effective with the 2014-15 academic year. The teams will compete officially for the first time as Division III intercollegiate squads playing in the NEWMAC Conference in the spring of 2015.
“This is a very significant stride for the CGA athletics program,” said Director of Athletics Tim Fitzpatrick. “It’s a great thing to be able to accommodate the interests and talents of so many cadets by bringing two very strong club programs to the varsity level. The popularity and growth of lacrosse both regionally and nationally in the recent past is very well documented. We look forward to the addition of the two lacrosse programs helping us attract more of our nation’s best and brightest student-athletes to the academy.”

On Friday, Davis & Elkins College will celebrate not only the groundbreaking for a state-of-the-art athletic field that will serve the community and its youth, but also the launch of a men's and women's lacrosse program.
Commenting on the addition of the sport to the College's roster of athletics, D&E President G.T. 'Buck' Smith said, "Since we are going to build an all-surface field, we should have a balance between seasonal sports. Additionally, as we move into the new conference, we want to have as many teams as possible competing."
With the start of the 2013-2014 sports season, D&E will compete in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) Division II which includes colleges from Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee and West Virginia. Several of those colleges have or are planning lacrosse programs, and dozens of other NCAA Division II colleges have lacrosse teams in place.

Lindenwood (MO) Officially Granted NCAA DII Membership

Lindenwood University President James D. Evans, PhD received notification today from the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) that the University has been granted provisional membership by the NCAA Division II Membership Committee. Lindenwood remains on track to become a full NCAA member for the 2013-14 school year.
“We are very pleased with today's news,” said Evans. “Many people all across our campus have been working toward this goal for some time. I am proud of their hard work, and thankful for the support of our board of directors, who made this possible when our journey began three years ago.”
In its provisional year, Lindenwood will continue to follow all NCAA Division II regulation and rules. Lindenwood can begin using the NCAA brand for promotional and recruiting purposes, including the NCAA logo, but it is ineligible for postseason competition for the year.
Lindenwood is a new member of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) and will begin conference play this fall. The MIAA sponsors championships in 19 sports and is currently a 15-member conference with schools in Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, and Oklahoma. The Lions have their first NCAA/MIAA home football game on September 8 against Southwest Baptist.

University of Virginia coach Dom Starsia won’t grant interview requests about a former player who beat his girlfriend to death two years ago. The rules of lacrosse allow for both player-to-player and stick-to-player contact, leaving players susceptible to acute traumatic injuries like those commonly seen in football and ice hockey.
However, as lacrosse continues to become a year-round game, chronic repetitive injuries like those typical in baseball, tennis and swimming may begin to surface.
Lacrosse has grown rapidly in the past 10 years. According to a recent survey by US Lacrosse, the sport's national governing body, participation has risen by an average of 10 percent a year since 2002, with more than 600,000 people now playing at various levels. Despite the physical nature of the sport, lacrosse maintains an injury rate substantially lower than those in football, wrestling, ice hockey, men's and women's soccer and gymnastics. However, as the game continues to expand, more players and more games mean more injuries.
