Big 10 To Sponsor Lacrosse, Hopkins Joins as Affiliate Member

Park Ridge, Ill. - The Big Ten Conference announced today that men's and women's lacrosse will become the conference's 27th and 28th official sports and that Johns Hopkins University has been accepted as a sport affiliate member for men's lacrosse only beginning with the 2014-15 academic year.


"We are excited to announce the launch of Big Ten men's and women's lacrosse and the addition of Johns Hopkins as a sport affiliate member," said Big Ten Commissioner James E. Delany. "Johns Hopkins is an outstanding institution with a legacy of success in men's lacrosse that is simply unmatched in intercollegiate athletics. Lacrosse is an emerging sport among our current schools and is a long-held passion among our East Coast institutions. With the addition of Maryland and Rutgers in all sports and Johns Hopkins for men's lacrosse, we will have the requisite number of institutions to make men's and women's lacrosse official conference sports, building upon our tradition of broad-based sports competition. We look forward to the start of the first Big Ten men's and women's lacrosse seasons in 2015."

Wabash College (DIII IN) & Cornell College (DIII IA) Add Lacrosse

Wabash College President Patrick E. White announced the addition of men's lacrosse as a varsity sport at the institution, beginning competition in the spring 2015. A search for a varsity head coach will begin immediately.

 “Many high school athletes committed to the sport are looking for excellent colleges where they might continue to play lacrosse while pursuing their education,” President White said. “Adding lacrosse will place Wabash in good conversations with these young men, many from our traditional markets. In addition, lacrosse is fast becoming a national sport with players on our North Coast Athletic Conference lacrosse rosters coming from 31 states. Now Wabash College will gain further attention from young men in high schools and regions where we are less well known.”

Cornell College will field men's and women's lacrosse teams starting with the 2014-15 academic year. The new programs will help Cornell in its goal to provide an exceptional experience for any student interested in athletics, said Cornell Director of Athletics John Cochrane.

"Interest in lacrosse has grown tremendously across the country in the last decade, including in areas where we already recruit students," Cochrane added. "Having lacrosse as an option will help us attract even more talented student-athletes."

Coast Guard Academy (D3 CT) and Davis & Elkins College (D2 WV) Add Men's and Women's Lacrosse

The U.S. Coast Guard Academy Division of Athletics announced today that it will elevate the men’s and women’s club lacrosse teams to varsity status, effective with the 2014-15 academic year. The teams will compete officially for the first time as Division III intercollegiate squads playing in the NEWMAC Conference in the spring of 2015.


“This is a very significant stride for the CGA athletics program,” said Director of Athletics Tim Fitzpatrick. “It’s a great thing to be able to accommodate the interests and talents of so many cadets by bringing two very strong club programs to the varsity level. The popularity and growth of lacrosse both regionally and nationally in the recent past is very well documented. We look forward to the addition of the two lacrosse programs helping us attract more of our nation’s best and brightest student-athletes to the academy.”

On Friday, Davis & Elkins College will celebrate not only the groundbreaking for a state-of-the-art athletic field that will serve the community and its youth, but also the launch of a men's and women's lacrosse program.

Commenting on the addition of the sport to the College's roster of athletics, D&E President G.T. 'Buck' Smith said, "Since we are going to build an all-surface field, we should have a balance between seasonal sports. Additionally, as we move into the new conference, we want to have as many teams as possible competing."

With the start of the 2013-2014 sports season, D&E will compete in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) Division II which includes colleges from Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee and West Virginia. Several of those colleges have or are planning lacrosse programs, and dozens of other NCAA Division II colleges have lacrosse teams in place.

Formation of The California Junior College Lacrosse Association Announced

Santa Rosa, California – April 10, 2013 – The growth of lacrosse continues to boom throughout the state of California and junior colleges are no exception. Set to begin in the fall of 2013, California junior college men’s lacrosse clubs are invited to compete under one umbrella within the California Junior College Lacrosse Association (CJCLA).

The CJCLA is dedicated to expanding junior college lacrosse opportunities for the student-athletes of California. Membership in the CJCLA is open to any California junior college lacrosse program that is officially recognized as a student club by their institution. The mission of the CJCLA is to provide new program assistance, student-athlete eligibility requirements, administering of individual awards and accolades for players, and hosting of the CJCLA Championship Tournament at the conclusion of the regular season.
