A Wall Street Journal report, citing a variety of statistics and data from youth leagues, school organizations and industry groups, says participation in youth sports is down roughly 4% from 2008 to 2012.
Basketball and football were among the sports seeing the most participation decline. Theories on why participation has declined range from concussion concerns for football and — a word familiar to lacrosse fans — single-sport specialization in sports sucking the fun out of the games.
